Savor the Field-to-Fork Flavors of Happy Valley, Pennsylvania

    Friday, January 2, 2026

What better place to experience field-to-fork dining than a region with more than 1,000 working farms? Happy Valley is a foodie paradise that combines chef-made dishes with locally grown meats and produce picked at the peak of its growing season. Each restaurant tells a story of sustainability, flavor, and community, making Happy Valley a must-visit destination for food lovers seeking authenticity and taste in every bite. Here are a few of my favorite restaurants in Happy Valley, which offer a field-to-fork experience.

RE Farm Cafe at Windswept Farm in State College is a regenerative farm, restaurant, and event space that focuses on sustainability, putting back into the environment what it takes out. Windswept Farm grows much of the produce and raises some livestock on site. You can see the fields where some of the vegetables are grown from the restaurant's back patio, and the rest of the ingredients they use in dishes are sourced from other local farms and businesses. The café was built in a barn house style to meet Living Building Challenge standards. The dishes at RE Farm Café are created by composers who are both trained chefs and student apprentices. My meal was a 4-course prix fixe menu, with several options for each course. I had lamb chops for my main course, which I still think about regularly. RE Farm Café requires reservations to prevent food waste on any given evening.

Pine Grove Hall in Pine Grove Mills is a restaurant, concert venue, and event space in a former Odd Fellows Hall. They source 90 percent of menu ingredients from local farms to create innovative dishes. This also means the menu is ever evolving, with some mainstays and what might be available in season from local providers. The farms are listed on the menu descriptions for each item, so you know exactly where the ingredients come from. Pine Grove Hall offers a venue for musicians and artists in a more intimate setting. I have eaten at Pine Grove Hall multiple times now, first, on a small plates night with a local band playing. I was able to try various seasonal items, like a spring sweet pea salad. The second was for a full dinner with a large Latin salsa band. Our meal included pizza for the table, and my main course was a delicious meatloaf sandwich. The flavors were well-balanced in each dish. Both times, the restaurant was packed and lively with everyone eating and enjoying the music. Reservations are preferred at Pine Grove Hall, and nights with special performances might require an additional ticket.

Flour & Stone is the sister restaurant to Pine Grove Hall, offering a more casual, intimate atmosphere and a Mediterranean- and Italian-inspired menu. The menu highlights locally sourced ingredients, provides a variety of gluten-free options, and features a curated selection of wines and cocktails to complement the meal. Since opening in 2024, additions have included brunch options featuring sandwiches and salads, a summer walk-up window offering a coffee bar, local small-batch ice cream, and select food items. On a weekend brunch visit, my meal was a beef dip sandwich with a delicious giardiniera made from local vegetables. It had a great combination of salty, savory, and spicy flavors. Other items on our table included spinach-and-mozzarella empanadas for an Italian twist, as well as the seasonal waffle with peaches. Flour & Stone recommends reservations, but walk-ins are welcome.

Gigi’s Southern Table brings elevated dishes with a Southern flair and a laid-back vibe to State College. Whether you are looking for a dinner with family and friends, a cozy date night, or a great brunch, they have a little of everything for everyone. Gigi’s has become a local favorite and a favorite among visitors. They have an ingredient-driven focus to their dishes, working with farm-fresh harvests and organic, free-range meats to create a field-to-fork southern menu. I have eaten there a couple of times. Their pork chop I had for dinner was sourced from a local, family-owned pork producer, and was tender and flavorful. I ate at Gigi’s for brunch with a group and loved the gravy & biscuits and beignets. The chicken & waffles and the bananas foster French toast at our table also looked amazing. Gigi’s Southern Table recommends reservations, but walk-ins are welcome.

These are just a few of the many restaurants in Happy Valley featuring field-to-fork dishes. This is a great way to experience local flavors and all the great food Happy Valley has to offer. Are you ready to make your field-to-fork journey to Happy Valley, Pennsylvania?
