The Arboretum at Penn State
The Arboretum at Penn State is a remarkable destination, with its design recognized internationally by the Architizer A+ Awards. Although Penn State first designated land for an arboretum back in 1914, the vision was only fully realized in 2007. When you visit the Arboretum at Penn State, you'll be stepping into a space that beautifully blends history with nature's treasures. Explore the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens, which feature 10 acres of themed gardens and an additional 14 acres of rolling meadows and walking paths. Within these cultivated gardens, you’ll find seasonal displays, specialty gardens, water features, and a garden designed especially for children. The largest cultivated area comprises three acres of habitats and plants, planted with species specifically chosen to attract birds and pollinators.
What seasonal highlights shouldn't be missed? The Pumpkin Festival at the Arboretum at Penn State is an annual celebration that showcases different amazing carved pumpkins, live music, and family-friendly activities. In addition to the Pumpkin Festival, the Arboretum hosts other seasonal events like the Winter Celebration, which showcases festive lights and decorations throughout the gardens for a magical winter experience. During the summer, you can also enjoy the Pollinator and Butterfly Festivals, which focus on conservation and highlight the importance of pollinators.

Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park
Penn’s Cave is the only cave in Pennsylvania listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the Ridge and Valley section of the Appalachian Highlands, Penn’s Cave offers a unique geological experience characterized by its stunning karst terrain with caves, springs, and underground streams. Visitors to the cave will witness extraordinary formations of stalactites and stalagmites that have taken on shapes like "The Statue of Liberty" and "The Garden of the Gods." Flowstones, curtains, cascades, and draperies sculpted by dripping water create a breathtaking underground landscape. In addition to the cave tour, visitors can explore the wildlife park, which features a variety of native North American animals in their natural habitats, providing a comprehensive experience of nature and geology. One of the most captivating aspects of Penn’s Cave is the legend of Nita-nee, a maiden from the Seneca Indian tribe, who fell in love with a French trapper named Malachi Boyer. Their forbidden love led to tragedy when Malachi was captured and left to die in the depths of Penn’s Cave. This story has been passed down through generations, and Nita-Nee's name was immortalized through Mount Nittany, eventually inspiring the name of the iconic Nittany Lion, Penn State's beloved symbol. This blend of natural wonders, rich history, and local legends makes Penn’s Cave & Wildlife Park a must-visit destination for anyone exploring the region.
