About the Bald Eagle State Forest

Bald Eagle State Forest is a 194,602-acre state forest in Pennsylvania that spans Centre, Clinton, Mifflin, Snyder, and Union Counties. The forest is named after the famous Native American Chief Bald Eagle and offers many activities.

Hikers will be delighted by more than 200 miles of trails, including the Mid State Trail, a popular thru-hiking trail. Trails also accommodate mountain biking and horseback riding.

The forest is home to the East Kettle Trail, one of the state’s few official ATV trails. According to PA DCNR, the trail is open from the Friday of Memorial Day weekend through the last full weekend in September, conditions permitting. This trail is roughly 20 miles and navigates old forest roads, trails, logging roads, and skid trails. Note that there are some narrow and very rough portions of the trail which may be challenging for new riders.

The forest also has two designated motorcycle trail systems. Other non-motorized trail users may be encountered on these trails such as hikers, horseback riders, and mountain bikers.

Pack a picnic, or set up for the day to go fishing. Staying the night? Camp at one of 45 designated roadside campsites, or pitch camp while backpacking.

Part of the 2.2 million acres of public lands maintained by the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
