Pine Grove Hall invites you into the warmth, rhythm, and joy of Brazilian Carnival with Session 2: From Samba to Bossa Nova, part of our four-part Brazilian Immersion series. This session explores the emergence of bossa nova in late-1950s Brazil, shaped by middle-class musicians and lyricists from Rio de Janeiro’s Zona Sul. We’ll trace key moments, including João Gilberto’s groundbreaking 1959 recording of “Chega de Saudade,” the historic 1962 concert at Carnegie Hall, and Antônio Carlos Jobim’s collaborations with Stan Getz and Frank Sinatra that propelled bossa nova onto the international stage. Brazilian Immersion is led by Rio de Janeiro–born songwriter, guitarist, percussionist, and educator Dr. Pepe Barcellos. Hosted in Pine Grove Hall’s upstairs listening room, these intimate, interactive gatherings blend storytelling, live music, singing, body movement, and hands-on percussion. Pepe traces the roots of samba, bossa nova, and related Brazilian traditions—connecting Afro-Brazilian cultural history, iconic recordings, carnival street culture, and his own experiences performing and teaching around the world. Whether you come to listen, move, sing, or simply soak it all in, these sessions are designed to be welcoming and inclusive for all.
