Join us for an engaging Artist Talk and Lecture featuring Sharif Bey, a Syracuse-based artist and educator known for his innovative ceramic and mixed-media work. Bey's artistry delves into the visual traditions of African and Oceanic art, as well as African American culture, drawing inspiration from modernism and functional pottery. His creations examine the symbolic and formal qualities of archetypal motifs, thoughtfully questioning how the meanings of icons and their functions evolve across cultures and time. With a rich educational background, including studies at The Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava, Slovakia, Bey holds a BFA from Slippery Rock University, an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a PhD in art education from Penn State University. His work is featured in numerous public collections, including a recent acquisition at the Palmer Museum of Art. Generous support for this event comes from Art Bridges, and attendees can enjoy extended hours at the Palmer every Thursday, thanks to the Art Bridges Foundation’s Access for All program.
