Weekend events: Counting down to Christmas

STATE COLLEGE – Are you counting down the days until Christmas?

If you’re not, there are just two weekends left – in case you were wondering.

If you’re looking for something to do (besides shop), we have a few ideas. There’s plenty going on in and around Happy Valley. Here’s a closer look at the weekend ahead:


Centre Dance Nutcracker – Centre Dance presents its own version of “The Nutcracker.” The event will be staged at 7 p.m. at The State Theatre in downtown State College. Tickets are $10 (plus ticketing fees). Visit www.thestatetheatre.org for more information.

Santa Express Train Rides – The popular family event returns to Bellefonte for another year. Train rides with Santa Claus take place at 4 p.m., 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $12, but the event usually sells out, so call be sure to visit www.eventbrite.com/e/bhrs-santa-express-train-rides-december-15-17-2017-tickets-39146282585 to check on ticket availability.


Bill Welch Memorial Cartoon Series – Check out your favorite Looney Tunes cartoons on the big screen at The State Theatre beginning at 10 a.m. Admission is free, so get ready to laugh at Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and Co. For more information, visit www.thestatetheatre.org.

Sampling Saturday – “Sampling Saturday” will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Harvest Shop at Tait Farms.  The afternoon will feature sampling of an array of delicious baked goods made in the region. Borrowing from the holiday traditions of Germany, Italy and France, there will be sampling of sweet treats and global goodness of the season.

Centre Dance Nutcracker – If you missed “The Nutcracker” on Friday, you have another chance to catch it as Centre Dance presents its own version of “The Nutcracker” on Saturday. The event will be staged at 7 p.m. at The State Theatre in downtown State College. Tickets are $10 (plus ticketing fees). Visit www.thestatetheatre.org for more information.


Penn State wrestling vs. Indiana – The Penn State sports schedule is light due to finals and the end of the semester, but Penn State wrestling returns to Rec Hall on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match vs. Indiana. Tickets for the match are still available by calling 1-800-NITTANY or stopping by the Rec Hall box office. It’s the lone home match for the Penn State grapplers in the month of December.

“A Charlie Brown Christmas” – Live performances of the classic “A Charlie Brown Christmas” will be staged at 3 and 6 p.m. at the Ferguson Township Elementary School on Sunday. Admission is free, but donations will be accepted for the UM Home for Children. The school is located at 215 Pine Grove Road in Pine Grove Mills.
