Wines, spirits and brews for the holidays
There are plenty of places in town where you can order a seasonally-inspired drink, but where do you head when you want to go straight to the source? Happy Valley has some fantastic wineries, breweries and distilleries. Stop by any of the favorites on our list for a seasonal variety, or the perfect holiday gift.
Skip the mass-produced cider-wannabes, and go with the real deal. Good Intent Cider, located in Bellefonte, brings real, quality cider, made from apples grown right here in the state, to discerning palates in Happy Valley. Visit the cozy tasting room right next to Talleyrand Park, which is due for an expansion this season. One of the menu items that includes flavors you may associate more with the fall season is Ginger Kid (apples, ginger and maple). If you live locally, keep an eye on the Good Intent Cider Facebook page, and you may be able to catch an evening the bar is serving up hot mulled cider!
Grab a bottle for any of your holiday happenings at Barrel 21, where the distillery offers vodka, spiced rum, gin and more. One selection that will finish off your holiday cocktails perfectly is the Apple Eau de Vie, a brandy made with local apples. Stick around at the restaurant and bar for a seasonal signature cocktail, like the Russian Pumpkin (Barrel 21 spiced rum, cream and house-made pumpkin pie simple syrup) or the Autumn Apple Pie (Barrel 21 Apple Eau de Vie, Barrel 21 Infused Vanilla Vodka, house-made cinnamon simple syrup, lemon juice and graham crackers around the rim).
Right next door to Barrel 21, head over for a taste of the spiced rum and Eau de Vie featured in a frozen drink at Otto’s Pub and Brewery. The Fall Harvest cocktail also includes Keewaydin Cider, apple juice, cranberry juice and cinnamon. Keep an eye on the Otto’s Pub and Brewery Facebook page for the fall-flavored weekly featured entrees, too (recent favorites have included a mouthwatering chorizo and roasted squash pizza!).
Happy Valley is blessed to have three great wineries. Whether you are looking to take part in a tasting, grab a bottle for a holiday gift for someone else (or yourself), you can’t go wrong with a local wine. Red or white, sweet or dry, all three wineries have something to fit the bill. Why not grab a bottle from each winery and have a little variety over the holidays?
The Big Spring Spirits cocktail menu is expansive, and it’s the perfect place to pick up a premium spirit to give as a gift. Some of the seasonal cocktails you’ll find are Eve’s Transgression (with rum, cinnamon-apple syrup, Tait Farm spiced apple shrub and lemon) and Unlikely Pear (vodka, rosemary syrup, pear puree and lemon).
If you’re looking for a porter, a stout, a lager or a wheat beer – and everything in between – Robin Hood Brewing Company is the place for you. Enjoy flights of your favorite Robin Hood brews for a dollar off during happy hour on Mondays and Tuesdays, or enjoy crowd-favorites Blueboary Wheat or a Peachey Wheat any day of the week.
