Taste something new in State College with these five new eateries
When you think of food and State College, there are a few classics that always spring to mind: the Berkey Creamery, The Tavern, The Allen Street Grill — now Spats at the Grill — the Original Waffle Shop, Pickles, Happy Valley Brewing Company, Otto's Pub and so many more. Although we love the food and atmosphere of these favorites, a few new eateries have popped up that are definitely worth a taste.
For the Sweet Tooth
Do you like donuts? Do you love ice cream? You're in luck! Happy Buns recently opened their doors at 426 E. College Ave. and we couldn't be more excited. Happy Buns has turned the idea of traditional ice cream sandwiches on its head and serves ice cream sandwiches made with donuts. With over 20 delicious, humorously-named ice cream flavors like Cuppa Joepa, PB&C and Beary Fluffy, you’re sure to find your new favorite treat.
Another newcomer to the donut scene is family-run Duck Donuts. Duck Donuts has a delightful selection of fresh donuts waiting for you at 125 S. Fraser St. in State College. Not only are they fresh and warm, they’re made to order! Their vanilla cake donut can be coated, topped and drizzled anyway you like. If you're not sure what you like, try one of the featured signature Duck combinations and find the perfect mix.
Peace Love and Little Donuts
If you saved some room for a few more sweet buns, stop by Peace Love and Little Donuts. Located at 421 E. Calder Way in State College, they are a perfect stop while taking a spring walk around campus. They have a wide selection of charmingly decorated fresh donuts. Get one for yourself, a disco dozen or assorted dozen for the office or a disco party box with 36 special treats.
If you’re driving in or out of State College and you happen to pass by Bedford, make sure you stop at the recently opened Whipped Bakery. With delightful pastries, morning breads, cookies and cupcakes with frosting as fluffy as a cloud and so much more, they are a mandatory stop on any road trip.
Taste Buds Kitchen
Create a culinary masterpiece completely from scratch with your friends and family at Taste Buds Kitchen at 331 Benner Pike, State College. Taste Buds Kitchen is a kitchen event studio that teaches kids by day, and hosts BYOB adult culinary experiences in the evening. Their studio is nut-free, so anyone and everyone is welcomed. They even host Cooking for a Cause Parties and partner with local nonprofits to help out their community.
Federal Taphouse has moved in and is making a name for themselves from their location at 130 S. Fraser St., Suite 200, State College. With 100 beers on tap, wood-fired pizzas, Sunday brunch and coal-fired entrees, they are sure to become one of your new favorites. Work your way through their extensive beer menu and take in the downtown sights from the many windows of their dining room as you relax with friends.
