Your Guide to THON Weekend as an Alumni
THON is ON this Feb. 15 to Feb. 17 — dates that honestly are around the corner. Penn State runs in our blood but “for the kids” is something that beats in our hearts, something that matters to students, families and alumni all over the country and world.
So, why not come on out that weekend and indulge in Happy Valley for everything it offers?
Whether it’s participating in the alumni challenge or eating a grilled sticky for old time’s sake, there is a way for every lion present and past to get involved this weekend!
Every year, Penn State alumni work together in bonds of blue and white to raise money to defeat childhood cancer. The Penn State community is challenged to raise more and more so we can beat past records and truly put the kids first! Make a donation and be a part of this great cause. Just some stats: $150 provides music therapy for patients, $500 provides five hours of psychological counseling and as much as $2,500 funds a Four Diamonds research lab for a week.
Spectator at THON
THON would not be the same without the supporters in the stands, holding posters, learning the Lion Dance and cheering on the dancers on the floor. If you wish to be part of the live action in THON, then you can be a spectator! All you have to do is arrive at the Bryce Jordan Center and make way to the General Spectator line located between Gates A & B. You will receive a wrist band, proceed with security screening and soon enough, you’ll be out there with Penn Staters, making a difference.
Rock the 80’s: A Benefit Concert for the Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund
If you happen to want to support another event that raises money for fighting cancer, be sure to check out the State Theatre’s annual Rock the 80’s benefit concert. Starting at 7 p.m., the benefit will showcase 10 local bands that will get your two feet moving. You will help support local cancer patients with the ticket you purchase!
These are worth traveling the world for — so be sure to get your hands on one when down for the weekend! These grilled sticky buns are made fresh daily and are undeniably delicious. Soft and warm, stickies are available in multiple locations including the Creamery and McLanahan’s!
Stop by the Palmer Museum of Art
Fraught with paintings, sculptures and nine rotating exhibits, within the 11 offered galleries, the Palmer will not disappoint. Eight of the 11 galleries at the Palmer Museum showcase art from the museum’s permanent collection that holds more than 8,200 objects — so, if you have a heart for art, be sure to plan a visit! Friday and Saturday, the museum is open from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
