Throw State College Brings Active Fun to Happy Valley
By Sierra Kennedy
Throwing axes in Happy Valley has become the one of the newest and most popular ways to have fun this summer. While some would consider the activity to be maybe a little unconventional, the transformative experience that Throw State College offers is one of a kind and keeps people coming back for more.
The venue first opened it doors and brought out the axes in August 2018, with a prime location at 278 W. Hamilton Ave. This came after a Pittsburgh location had already been offering patrons the option to throw axes in a safe, but still extremely entertaining environment.
State College residents and tourists can come visit the location and book a standardized target session, which lasts for one hour. The company also adds in a 10-minute practice session to let patrons get in the swing of things before going on the clock.
While persons of any age can participate as long as he or she has adequate strength to hold an axe, Throw caters to a wide range of clientele.
“In terms of group size, it just always drastically varies — any group size is comfortable here. We might have two people that come throw together,” stated Throw @ IQ Escape Room General Manager Emma Hocker. “We also have a lot of corporate events where 30 people are here throwing for an hour socializing in our event room space. Every group seems to be comfortable, and it works for them.”
The venue also makes sure to give each patron and group a unique experience, as axe throwing is not the only activity on the agenda. Throw also houses an escape room that allows customers to work together to solve interactive games.
The two escape rooms are featured within the same facility, and visitors can book parties up to 10 guests for either gaming option.
The new location does not plan on stopping there; the company is actively working to continuously improve upon the entertainment-factor of Throw State College.
“We are trying to expand on the games that we play, as well. You know we don't just have a simple scoring games — we want to make it more creative,” said Hocker. “Games like trivia and Tic-Tac-Throw, those are a priority for us.”
Throw @ IQ Escape Room offers more than enough options to keep the community engaged in active fun. While advanced reservations can be made online, walk-ins are accepted at Throw during the following hours:
