PSU vs. Akron: Good, Bad and Ugly

Well, that was a statement.

Penn State opened the 2017 campaign with an impressive 52-0 drubbing of Akron at Beaver Stadium on a waterlogged Saturday afternoon. It was, without a doubt, the most impressive opener in the James Franklin Era.

Each and every week at HappyValley.com, we’ll take a look at the highlights of the game with a feature called The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

Here’s our Week One report:

The Good — Who else? Saquon Barkley. The Heisman Trophy candidate was impressive, rushing for 172 yards on just 14 carries. He also scored twice. He certainly could have had a 200-plus day, but head coach James Franklin ended his day early, and understandably so.

The Bad — The weather. Hard to pick on Mother Nature, but come on! It was gorgeous all week long and then … it was a downright ugly afternoon for football. It certainly impacted the crowd, but those who did sit in the torrential rain go to see quite a show.

The Ugly — Akron. Quite simply, the Zips were pathetic. Even after the Nittany Lions pulled their starters, Akron could do little with the football. We knew it would be a blowout, but it was hard to envision a shutout.

Bring on Pitt.
