PSU moves to No. 2; ESPN's College Gameday coming

UNIVERSITY PARK – It’s a big week in Happy Valley.

It’s Michigan week, of course. But that isn’t the big news. The big news is that the Nittany Lions moved up a slot in the AP poll without having played a game this weekend.

On Friday night, then-No. 2 Clemson fell in a dramatic upset at Syracuse on Friday night, 27-24. On Sunday, voters pushed Penn State up a slot. The Nittany Lions are now the No. 2 team in the nation, just behind Alabama.

The No. 2 ranking is the highest the Lions (6-0) have been since 1999. The Nittany Lions are one of three Big Ten teams in the Top 10. Undefeated Wisconsin comes in at No. 5 and one-loss Ohio State is ranked at No. 6.

Penn State was idle on Saturday, but have three huge games coming up. It all begins this week when once-beaten Michigan (No. 19) visits Beaver Stadium for the Whiteout game beginning at 7:30 p.m. Following Michigan, Penn State goes on the road against Ohio State (Oct. 28) and Michigan State (Nov. 4).

The game is sold out but will be televised by ABC.

ESPN’s “College Gameday” will originate from State College this weekend. Details on times and location are expected to be announced today.
