Penn State Hockey Is No. 1 for First Time Ever

For the first time in program history, the Penn State men's ice hockey team is ranked No. 1 in the nation.

Following their home sweep of Michigan State last weekend, the Nittany Lions (16-2-1) jumped from No. 4 to the top spot, earning a whopping 30 first place votes in the latest USCHO poll. Denver received the second-most first place votes with just 16.

Penn State also climbed from No. 4 to No. 2 in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll, and to No. 1 in the PairWise rankings.

It's quite the amazing feat when you consider that the Penn State hockey program didn't exist just over five years ago.

The Nittany Lions take on Ohio State at home this weekend, with games Friday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 21 at 7 p.m. They split their last series against the Buckeyes 1-1, so it will certainly make for a good faceoff.
