Looking ahead to 2018 in Happy Valley

We are … into the stretch run of 2017. A year’s worth of memories are headed into the books. What a year it has been – but as we prepare to flip the calendar, it’s time to look ahead and see what 2018 will have to offer.

With that in mind, here’s a sneak peek at what you should pencil into your calendar for next year.

THON

The largest student-run philanthropy in the world will take place on Feb. 16-18 at the Bryce Jordan Center. THON continues to grow each and every year, so make your plans now for one of the most amazing weekends Happy Valley has to offer.

BLUE-WHITE WEEKEND

This is truly a tradition unlike any other. Sure, other colleges have annual scrimmages that are open to the public, but nothing is quite like the Blue-White Game at Beaver Stadium. It’s not just a scrimmage – it’s an event. Fans tailgate, there is an autograph session with players. Oh, and there’s a game! You’ll get a chance to take a sneak peek at the 2018 Nittany Lions as head coach James Franklin readies his squad for another run at the Big Ten Championship. The game is scheduled for Saturday, April 21, 2018. Admission is free.

REUNION WEEKEND

Reunions are in the air! Usher in summer with some of your favorite people and favorite memories. Check our listings for cabins, campgrounds or even a hostel. Make reconnecting with your former Penn Staters an experience no one will forget anytime soon! As of press time, dates for Reunion Weekend had not been announced as of press time.

4TH  FEST

The Central PA 4th Fest is a volunteer-run celebration of Independence Day. The day begins with the Firecracker 4K and continues all afternoon with games, music and food. The day culminates with one of the best fireworks shows in the nation. Admission is free, but VIP passes are available for sale.

ARTS FEST

The Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts is a Penn State tradition! Start planning now for the 52nd annual event, which will take place from July 12-15. As usual, there will be food vendors, live music and plenty of art for sale.

SEASON OPENER

The Penn State football team will open its 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1, 2018 against Appalachian State at Beaver Stadium. The team will look a little different, but the excitement of the home opener will be there for sure.

WHITE OUT

Because the teams are such fierce rivals, one would believe that the White Out Game will be the Sept. 29 tilt with Ohio State. Although a time has not been set, it will likely be a night game and will be nationally televised. The last two games in the series have been epic. At Beaver Stadium in 2016, Penn State blocked a field goal and returned it for a touchdown in a 24-21 upset win of the then-No. 2 team in the nation. This season, the Buckeyes got revenge in the form of a 39-38 comeback win over the Nittany Lions.
