UNIVERSITY PARK – Feeling down because football season is almost over? Don’t fret, basketball season is just starting to heat up.
Both the Nittany Lions and Lady Lions are off to undefeated starts. The Nittany Lions drubbed cross-state rival Pitt, 85-54, in the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center on Monday night. They will face a stiff test tonight against No. 16 Texas A&M at 6 p.m.
Let’s take a look at some of the must-see games for each team this winter. There’s quite a bit to choose from!
The Nittany Lions are off to an impressive start, winning their first five games of the season. The Lions return home on Friday, Nov. 24. Instead of hitting the shopping mall, head to the Bryce Jordan Center to watch the Lions take on Oral Roberts at 3 p.m. It’s one of the final non-conference games of the year.
While there are several non-conference games left on the slate, the noteworthy games are, without a doubt, the conference games. That’s when head coach Patrick Chambers will find out just how good his Lions are.
Circle these dates (6): Monday, Dec. 4 vs. Wisconsin (7 p.m.); Friday, Jan. 5 vs. Northwestern (8 p.m.); Friday, Jan. 12 vs. Nebraska (7 p.m.); Saturday, Feb. 3 vs. Iowa (6 or 8 p.m.); Wednesday, Feb. 7 vs. Maryland (6:30 p.m.); Thursday, Feb. 15 vs. Ohio State (8 p.m.).
Like the men, the Penn State women’s basketball team is off to a flying start. The Lady Lions are undefeated as they head to Las Vegas for the South Point Shootout this weekend. Penn State head coach Coquese Washington has an extremely young squad – and she knows it.
“I think the challenge is to not go too fast,” Washington said. “You can’t throw a whole bunch of things at the wall and nothing sticks. You want to challenge them, but move them along so they’ll be effective on gameday.”
The Lady Lions have one big non-conference game remaining, Thursday, Nov. 30 vs. Wake Forest. After that, the conference games will decide their fate as far as getting back to the big dance is concerned.
The Lady Lions have some nice conference matchups at home in 2017-18.
Circle these dates (5): Sunday, Dec. 31 vs. Maryland (2 p.m.); Wednesday, Jan. 10 vs. Minnesota (7 p.m.); Sunday, Feb. 4 vs. Michigan State (2 p.m.); Wednesday, Feb. 14 (7 p.m.); Sunday, Feb. 25 vs. Ohio State (noon).
