Stay Green, Stay Local
Nation’s Top Eco-Friendly Resort is in the Heart of Happy Valley
If you’re looking to stay at the nation’s top eco-friendly resort, you don’t have to look beyond Happy Valley.
Nestled in the picturesque Bald Eagle State Park, just a 30-minute drive from Beaver Stadium, is The Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, recently voted the Best Eco-Friendly Resort in a USA Today 10 Best Readers' Choice poll.
“This designation demonstrates that our values and commitment to environmental stewardship are shared by our customers and are a consideration when they decide where, how, and when to vacation here in Central Pennsylvania,” said Innkeeper at The Nature Inn, Charlie Brooks.
A Gold LEED certified lodge, The Nature Inn boasts the latest green technologies and ecologically-sound features, including on-site renewable energy, native, water-efficient landscaping, and a 2,800-gallon rainwater harvesting system. Guests also participate in the mission of the Inn through features like energy monitoring in each room, low-flow fixtures and dual-flush toilets that reduce water use by more than 30%, and direct access to hiking and biking trails to encourage healthy interaction with park resources.
“Our commitment to environmental stewardship simply demonstrates what’s possible when an organization elects to hold itself accountable in protecting the environment and local, natural resources,” said Brooks. “Our hope is that we inspire our guests to take small steps in their own lives that positively impact, protect and conserve the resources in their communities.”
The Nature Inn was selected among 20 properties across the country by USA Today travel writers. A poll was then opened for voting via social media, and after 30 days, The Nature Inn was deemed the winner.
"Receiving this designation in many ways validates the core mission of this project which is to offer comfortable, well-appointed and environmentally-sustainable overnight accommodations within the Pennsylvania State Park system," said Brooks.
The Inn overlooks FJ Sayers Reservoir and provides easy access to all that Bald Eagle State Park offers, including boating, biking, fishing, swimming, and birding. Many of the 16 guestrooms have balconies overlooking the lake, and the Inn has a large outdoor patio with gas grills and a fire pit for guest use. Binoculars and birding guides are kept in each guest room to facilitate the connection with birding, one of the park's main attractions.
Built in 2009, the lodge was the first of its kind built by the Bureau of State Parks to follow the DCNR's mission statement of "Promote Responsible Stewardship of the Commonwealth's Natural Resources.
"We conduct Inn operations in a manner that coincides with that vision," said Brooks. "It's important because those natural resources, if not protected, can become threatened with the passing of time."
Visitors are invited to stay at the country’s greenest hotel during their next trip to Happy Valley, as a laid-back lodging option to the hustle and bustle of downtown State College. Brooks also invites locals to enjoy a staycation at the lodge.
“It's a great destination for what we like to call 'Get away, stay local.' There is still plenty of weeknight availability during the upcoming fall season," he said.
