May 26-30: Boalsburg Memorial Day Celebration
Local legend has it Memorial Day was born in Boalsburg in 1864. The town certainly knows how to honor the fallen and celebrate their sacrifices.
June 3-4: Summer’s Best Music Festival
More than 10 national acts, along with favorite local bands, will mount one of two main stages in the Garner Street parking lot for ticketed shows and various other stages for free performances. Enjoy the music, take advantage of two outdoor beer pubs and don’t miss the State College Downtown Rotary Ice Cream Festival.
June 11 3-7 p.m. Lemont Village Strawberry Festival
Stop by historic Lemont Village for an afternoon of fresh strawberries and desert at a modest $6 for adult and $3 for children. Live music, tours of the Granary, kids’ activities put on by the Art Alliance of Central PA, pony rides for a dollar and “speeder” rides courtesy of the Bellefonte Historical Railroad Society. Make sure to check out the other spring and summer fun happening at Lemont Village, like weekly concerts on the Village Green and Lemont Fest from July 15-17.
June 17: CelticFest at Tussey Mountain
Spend the evening trying out traditional activities like the Stone Throw, Caber Toss and Tug-of-War. Not sure if Celtic jams and fare are your scene? You’ll never know until you try! Tickets are available for $10 in advance or $15 at the door and a good time is guaranteed for all.
July 4: Central PA 4th Fest
State College is transformed into a haven of patriotism on the 4th of July. The afternoon is full of events taking place in and around Penn State’s east campus like the Firecracker 4K race with over 1000 participants and the Parade of Heroes, starting in front of the Municipal Building and ending at the Bryce Jordan Center, which recognizes Central PA’s heroes. Local bands rock out on three different stages and the festivities culminate in a fireworks display that continually ranks among the best in the nation.
July 13-17: 50th Annual Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts
For half a century, Arts Fest has positioned Happy Valley as the place to be for summer fun. Downtown State College and Penn State campus will be bustling with 125,000 people roaming about for the Sidewalk Sale and Exhibition, live music, refreshing dumping buckets and misting water features, sand sculptures and an Italian Street Painting Festival. The Festival features special events like children’s day on Wednesday, July 13 and BookFest on Saturday, July 16. Indulge in fresh squeezed lemonade, funnel cake, kettle corn, kabobs or whatever other guilty pleasure suits your fancy.
July 14-17: 24th Annual People’s Choice Festival of Pennsylvania Arts and Crafts
People’s Choice will feature almost 200 artists, 24 food vendors and 40 musical acts on the Military Museum lawn in Boalsburg. Taste and buy wines from Seven Mountains Wince Cellars, Mount Nittany Vineyard & Winery and more. In addition to filling up on the usual festival grub, take home specialty foods from The Piper’s Peck, Tait Farm, Big Al’s Sweet & Spicy Mustard and many more.
July-August: WingFest at Tussey Mountain
July 21 marks the kickoff of the 17th annual WingFest at Tussey Mountain. There are six rounds in total for consecutive Thursday evenings, after which a winner is crowned. Duffy’s Tavern has taken home first prize the past two years. Will they make it a hat trick, or will an underdog claim the title? Find out for yourself—if you can stand the heat.
