Looking back: Fiesta Bowl history, Part III

UNIVERSITY PARK – Penn State’s third trip to the Fiesta Bowl came on the heels of one of the biggest wins in the program’s history.

The Nittany Lions knocked off No. 1 Pitt in the classic 48-14 win at Pitt Stadium. As a reward, the Lions were given a trip to the Fiesta Bowl and a matchup against No. 18 USC. Penn State rolled into the game sporting a 9-2 record, with their only losses coming against Miami and Alabama.

For the third time, Penn State would come out on the winning side of the Fiesta Bowl, posting a convincing 26-10 win over the Trojans in what was the final collegiate game for Hall of Famer Marcus Allen.

Allen fumbled on the first play from scrimmage and Penn State hit paydirt just a few plays later.

Star running back Curt Warner turned the turnover into points . However, a Todd Blackledge pick six made it 7-7. However, Penn State would score the next 17 points. Blackledge hooked up for a 52-yard touchdown with Gregg Garrity. A field goal before halftime pushed the PSU lead to 17-7.

In the second half, Warner scored another TD to make it 24-7. USC responded with a field goal to trim the Penn State lead to 24-10. Late in the third quarter, Dave Paffenroth’s punt was blocked and went out of the end zone for a safety.

There was no scoring in the fourth quarter and Penn State improved to 3-0 in Fiesta Bowls.
