Super Saturday: PSU teams complete trifecta
UNIVERSITY PARK — It was a clean sweep for three Penn State teams on Saturday.
Penn State men’s basketball, men’s ice hockey and women’s volleyball all won their respective contests.
The men’s basketball team started the afternoon with a 74-54 win over George Washington at the Bryce Jordan Center. Five Nittany Lions reached double figures in the win as the Nittany Lions improved to 8-3 on the season.
The men’s hockey team defeated Robert Morris University, 7-4, at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions’ goal scorers were Nikita Pavlychev, Chase Berger and Trevor Hamilton. Nate Sucese Denis Smirnov scored two goals apiece.
Penn State improved to 11-7-2. The Colonials dropped to 5-11-1 with the loss.
Finally, the No. 1 Penn State women’s volleyball team had the biggest wins of the day. The Nittany Lions advanced to the Final Four with a sweep of No. 12 Michigan State by scores of 25-23, 25-17 and 28-26 at Rec Hall.
Simone Lee led the way with 12 kills. Abby Detering had 21 assists in the win.
Penn State improved to 33-1. The Spartans’ season ended at 24-9.
The Nittany Lions will face Nebraska on Thursday.
