Volleyball, Victorian Christmas highlight calendar

If you are counting down the weekends until Christmas, just a few remain.

OK, three.

If you are tired of shopping, wrapping, baking, decorating or anything else on your holiday list, take a break and have some fun! There’s plenty going on in Happy Valley this weekend! Here’s a handy list of what’s going on so you can plan your weekend for maximum fun!

FRIDAY, DEC. 8

Penn State women’s volleyball vs. Missouri – The Penn State women’s volleyball team faces Missouri in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The match is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Rec Hall. The Nittany Lions enter the match with an impressive 31-1 record as they gun for another National Championship under Russ Rose.

Arboretum Winter Celebration – The Arboretum at Penn State will hold its annual Winter Celebration from 5 to 7 p.m. There will be large displays of trees and wreaths at the event, so stop by and check things out. Admission is free.

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas – The annual event kicks off on Friday with the Festival of Trees at CPI, horse-drawn carriage rides throughout downtown and plenty of food and entertainment. The carriage rides are probably one of the most popular attractions, so get to Bellefonte early as the carriages roll from 5 to 8 p.m.

SATURDAY, DEC. 9

Pop Up Ave. – A holiday version of the always-popular Pop Up Ave. will be held in downtown State College from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The pop-up flea market will feature food, gifts and handmade wares for sale.

Santa in the Cave – Want to see Santa Claus, but in a completely different way? Check out “Santa in the Cave” at Lincoln Caverns in Huntingdon from 1 to 4 p.m. If you’ve never been to Lincoln Caverns, Christmas is the perfect time to check it out.

Bellefonte Victorian Christmas – The annual event continues on Saturday. For day two, horse-drawn carriage rides will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. As you walk through Bellefonte, be sure to chat with some of the characters from Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” who will be strolling through downtown.

Penn State men’s basketball vs. George Washington – The Penn State men’s basketball team will host George Washington in a critical non-conference matchup at 4 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions are coming off a tough one-point loss to Wisconsin on Monday.

Penn State women’s volleyball vs. TBA – If the Penn State women’s volleyball team takes down Missouri on Friday afternoon, the journey will continue at 8 p.m. on Saturday night at Rec Hall. The opponent will be the winner of Michigan State-Illinois.

SUNDAY, DEC. 10

Festival of Trees and Holiday Marketplace – The Centre County United Way’s Festival of Trees and Holiday Marketplace will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at CPI in Pleasant Gap. Get in the holiday spirit by checking out the trees, which are decorated by local organizations.

Handel’s “Messiah” – The Pennsylvania Chamber Orchestra presents “Handel’s Messiah at 2:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. at The State Theatre in downtown State College. Tickets are $24.50 (+3.50 ticketing fee); children are $6.50 (+1.50 ticketing fee) and all seats are reserved.
