Barkley piles up Big Ten Conference awards

UNIVERSITY PARK – Talk about a trifecta.

Penn State running back Saquon Barkley was selected as the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Running Back of the Year and Return Specialist of the Year on Thursday.

The Penn State junior is just the second player in conference history to win three major awards. Michigan’s Jabril Peppers was named Defensive Player of the Year, Linebacker of the Year and Return Specialist of the Year in 2016.

For Barkley, it was his second straight Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year award. He is the first player to claim back-to-back awards since Braxton Miller did it in 2012 and 2013. Barkley is the just the third player to win multiple Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year Honors. The other players were Miller and Purdue’s Drew Brees (1998 and 2000).

Barkley is the first back-to-back Big Ten Running Back of the Year since Wisconsin’s Montee Ball won the award in 2011 and 2012.

Barkley recently announced that he will play in Penn State’s bowl game, which will be determined on Sunday,
