Encore: Barkley collects first-team All-Conference honor

UNIVERSITY PARK – Another day, more awards for the Penn State football team.

Today, Nittany Lion all-everything running back Saquon Barkley was named first-team all-Big Ten running back for the second consecutive year, joining five teammates on the all-conference team.

Barkley was a unanimous coaches and media selection after rushing for 1,134 yards and 16 touchdowns. He also caught 47 passes for 594 yards and three more touchdowns. The honor means that Barkley is a three-time all-Big Ten selection. He is the first running back since Curtis Enis to garner consecutive first-team honors.

Barkley was the only Penn State player named to the coaches’ first-team offense. Quarterback Trace McSorley, tight end Mike Gesicki and receiver DaeSean Hamilton were named second team.

Gesicki was named first-team tight end by the media.

Barkley was also named the Big Ten’s first-team kick returner.

Named to the third team were tackle Ryan Bates (coaches, media selection) and wide receiver DaeSean Hamilton (media). Juwan Johnson was selected as an honorable mention by coaches and media.

On Thursday, the Big Ten will announce its individual awards. Barkley will look to repeat as offensive player of the year.

Additionally, Barkley is among five finalists for the Walter Camp National Player of the Year award. He joins Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson, Stanford running back Bryce Love, Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield and San Diego State running back Rashaad Penny.
