Weekend events: Volleyball and holiday fun fill the calendar

STATE COLLEGE – Winter is coming.

OK, it’s here.

Although it may not feel like December just yet in Happy Valley, the calendar tells us that it is indeed December.

College football is over (for now), but there’s still plenty to do in Happy Valley. Let’s check out this weekend’s events:

FRIDAY, DEC. 1

Christmas in Lemont – From 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., the German-style market will take over The Granary in Lemont. There will be local products and crafts for sale as well as music, food, drinks and lots of holiday cheer.

For more information, visit http://www.lemontvillage.org/christmas-market.

Penn State women’s volleyball – The high-flying women’s volleyball team will take on Howard at 7:30 p.m. in Rec Hall. The game will be the nightcap for an NCAA Volleyball first-round doubleheader. In the opening game, VCU takes on the University of Pittsburgh beginning at 5 p.m. Penn State enters the tournament at 27-1 and ranked No. 1 in the country.

SATURDAY, DEC. 2

Winter Craft Market – More than 70 artists and vendors set up shop for the 42nd annual Winter Craft Market at its new location, the Penn Stater. It’s the perfect opportunity for you to shop local and find one-of-a-kind handmade Christmas gifts for everyone on your list. The event runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Visit http://wintercraftmarket.com for more information.

Christmas in Lemont – The two-day event wraps up with more holiday fun from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Granary in Lemont.

Penn State women’s volleyball – Barring a huge upset, Penn State will be back in action on Saturday night, taking on either VCU or Pitt. If it’s Pitt, the Russ Rose’s Nittany Lions will have a chance to pull off a rare trifecta over the intrastate rivals (the Nittany Lions have crushed Pitt in both football and men’s basketball this season). Get ready to “Dominate the State,” Happy Valley!

Volleyball action will begin at 6:30 p.m. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.gopsusports.com.

SUNDAY, DEC. 3

Taste of the Town – A great night of delicious food, wine and spirits from over 30 local restaurants will take place at the President’s Hall at The Penn Stater. Silent and live auctions will take place and all proceeds will benefit the Centre County United Way. Cost is $75 per person or $650 for a table of 10. For more information, call (814) 238-8283.

Penn State women’s basketball – The Penn State women’s basketball team takes on Manhattan at 2 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. It is the middle game of a three-game homestretch for the Lady Lions.
