Penn State volleyball is top seed as tourney begins
UNIVERSITY PARK – For the 28th consecutive season, the Penn State women’s volleyball team (29-1) will serve as one of the 16 sites for the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, this time as the No. 1 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.
The NCAA tournament will start in University Park on Dec. 1 on with a 5 p.m. match at Pittsburgh (25-6) and VCU (30-2) and the second match of the night at 7:30 p.m. will feature the host Nittany Lions and Howard (16-15).
Penn State has a 3-0 record all-time against Howard, with the last meeting coming in September 2016, where the Nittany Lions swept the Bison.
With the No. 1 overall seed, Penn State will host the regional on Dec. 8 and 9 as well.
The Nittany Lions are one of only two NCAA Division I women’s volleyball programs to compete in all 37 NCAA Championship postseason tournaments since 1981. In tournament play, the Nittany Lions own a 94-29 all-time record, having made 12 appearances in the final four.
Penn State is one of eight Big Ten teams to make the tournament, as Nebraska was No. 5, and Minnesota claimed No. 7, each earning the opportunity to host the first and second rounds. Wisconsin, Michigan State, Michigan, Purdue, and Illinois all earned a spot in the field of 64.
First- and second-round matches will be played November 30 through December 2 at 16 campus sites. Teams winning both matches will move on to regional play December 8 and 9. Regionals for the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Championship will be held at four non-predetermined campus sites, which will be announced after play concludes, on December 2. At each site, four teams will compete in single-elimination regional semifinal competition.
The regional winners will advance to the national semifinals and championship final co-hosted by the University of Missouri Kansas City, University of Kansas and Kansas City Sports Commission on December 14 and 16 at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. The national semifinal matches will broadcast on ESPN/ESPN2 and the championship match will broadcast on ESPN2.
All-session tickets for the first and second rounds are priced at $12 for adults and $10 for students and youth ages 12 and under. Groups of 20 or more may purchase tickets at a discounted rate of $8.
Fans can purchase tickets by calling 1-800 -NITTANY or by visiting the Athletics Ticket Office in the Bryce Jordan Center from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
Single-match tickets will only be sold at the door the night of each match. Tickets are $8 for adults and $6 for students and youth ages 12 and under. Doors will open at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 1 and 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15.
