Penn State predictions: The regular season finale
The Penn State football team will close off a wildly successful season on Saturday at Maryland. The Nittany Lions are a 21-point favorite as the season comes to a close. It’s the final week of the season, which typically features a rival. The Lions, however, are stuck with Maryland, so let’s enjoy it and make the most of it.
Here are our staff picks:
Matt Lingerman, sports intern (Season record 10-1): After getting their offensive mojo back last week against Nebraska, the Nittany Lions are looking to close out the regular season on a high note in Maryland. The Terms currently sit in last place in the Big Ten East and have struggled mightily all season, allowing 24 or more points in all but two games. This matchup favors Penn State on both sides of the ball and should be a straightforward win to close out the Big Ten slate.
Penn State 52, Maryland 13.
Chris Morelli, managing editor (season record 10-1): What a season it has been for the Nittany Lions. Against Maryland, the Lions will come out clicking and will not let their foot off the gas in this one. Saquon Barkley makes a final push for Heisman Trophy and the Penn State D comes up big with some timely turnovers.
Penn State 43, Maryland 11.
John Patishnock, beat writer (season record 10-1): The Niittany Lions continue the positive energy they’ve created since Maryland players refused to shake hands prior to the 2014 game at Beaver Stadium. Penn State has won the following two games by a combined score of 69-44, and former Maryland coach Randy Edsall is now leading Connecticut, which plays in the American Athletic Conference. The Huskies have a 3-8 record this season.
Penn State 45, Maryland 17.
Michael Kresovich, sports intern (season record 9-2): The 9-2 Nittany Lions are considered to be out of the four-team College Football playoff as they sit at No. 10. However, they should end up in a premier bowl, all things considered. Maryland has had injuries disrupt its season, as it comes into the game at 4-7. Penn State has too much offensive talent for Maryland to make this a contest. This could be Saquon Barkley’s potential last regular season game for Penn State as well.
Penn State, 37, Maryland 21.
Abbi Sales, sports intern (season record 9-2): As Penn State enters its last regular season game, the Lions have to walk away with a win in order to be remotely relevant for the College Football playoff. They just squeaked into the rankings at No. 10 but they need a Hail Mary for their hopes to come to fruition. Maryland has lost six out of their last seven games, making the matchup seem irrelevant, but the Nittany Lions can't lose sight of what lies ahead. The Terrapins are known to bring pressure at the beginning of the game but Penn State's offense will bring the heat.
Penn State 48, Maryland 21.
