Nittany Notes: Movement in the AP poll for Lions
UNIVERSITY PARK – Another week, another move in the polls.
Penn State moved up a spot in the AP Top 25 poll. The Nittany Lions are now sitting at No. 12. Oklahoma State’s loss sent the Cowboys tumbling eight spots and enabled some movement in the poll.
The 11 teams ahead of Penn State are: 1. Alabama (11-0); 2. Miami (10-0); 3. Oklahoma (10-1); 4. Clemson (10-1); 5. Wisconsin (11-0); 6. Auburn (9-2); 7. Georgia (10-1); 8. Ohio State (9-2); 9. Notre Dame (9-2); 10. TCU (9-2); 11. USC (10-2).
The Nittany Lions are now 9-2 with close losses to Ohio State (39-38) and Michigan State (27-24).
The kick time for Penn State’s season finale with Maryland is set. The game will kick at 3:30 p.m. and be televised on the Big Ten Network.
It will be the 41st meeting between the schools. Penn State leads the series, 37-2-1. The Nittany Lions blew out Maryland last season, 38-14, at Beaver Stadium. The last meeting in Maryland was a thrilling 31-30 Penn State win at M&T Bank Stadium.
Maryland’s two wins in the series have been in 1961 and 2014.
Barkley honored … again
Penn State running back Saquon Barkley earned Big Ten Co-Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against Nebraska. It was Barkley’s sixth Big Ten weekly award of the season and fourth offensive honor of the year.
Barkley’s six Player of the Week honors are the most in a single season in Big Ten history – not including Freshman of the Week honors.
Back in the Hunt
Barkley is back in the hunt for the Heisman Trophy after a command performance against Nebraska on Saturday. He piled up 224 all-purpose yards. Of those, 158 came on the ground. However, it should be noted that the Cornhuskers’ defense is one of the worst in the nation.
He is likely chasing Baker Mayfield of Oklahoma and Bryce Love of Stanford.
