Penn State Predictions: Will the Lions stay unbeaten?
UNIVERSITY PARK – The biggest test of the 2017 season (so far) happens on Saturday.
No. 19 Michigan (5-1) visits the No. 2 Nittany Lions (6-0) in a primetime matchup at Beaver Stadium. The game is a White Out, a sellout and the game of the year – at least until next week.
But make no mistake about it: This will be a good ballgame. If you’ve got a ticket, lucky you. If you don’t have one, be sure to watch – because it could be one for the ages. Remember the four-overtime classic at Beaver Stadium? Yep, that was a White Out too.
So, how will the Nittany Lions fare? Well, our staff has some ideas. Let’s get to the picks!
Michael Kresovich, sports intern (season record 6-0): The Nittany Lions next three games will prove if they deserve to be ranked among the top teams in the county. The Nittany Lions were embarrassed last season in Ann Arbor. This season, the Wolverines have been shaky at the quarterback position and have already lost a game in Big Ten play. Expect Heisman Trophy favorite, Saquon Barkley, to have a field day, alongside the Penn State defense. The Michigan offense will struggle with the talented Penn State secondary. With the rabid fans and White Out behind them, Penn State will roll through Michigan.
Penn State 38, Michigan 20.
Matt Lingerman, sports intern (Season record 6-0): The power of the White Out is very real. But what's even more powerful is the fact that Penn State is simply a better football team than the No. 19 Wolverines. Michigan has a sputtering offense led by a second-string quarterback who has struggled since taking over for the injured Will Speight, and I fully expect Penn State's defense to swallow them up. Joe Moorhead will have a real challenge in Michigan's defense, but with Saquon Barkley in his backfield there's no reason Penn State shouldn't win this game.
Penn State 24, Michigan 10.
Chris Morelli, managing editor (season record 6-0): This will be the biggest test of the year for the Nittany Lions. Michigan’s defense is good, but the Nittany Lions should be able to find the end zone. It won’t be a high-scoring affair, but look for Saquon Barkley to make a couple of splash plays. Close into the fourth, but the Lions salt it away with a late score.
Penn State 21, Michigan 10.
John Patishnock, beat writer (season record 6-0): If the Nittany Lions won’t allow a defensive or special teams touchdown. After watching Michigan the past few weeks, it’s clear the Wolverines can’t create a sustainable offense. If the Lions don’t allow any non-offensive scores, that should go a long way in ensuring Michigan doesn’t get to 24 points.
Penn State 31, Michigan 13.
Abbi Sales, sports intern (season record 6-0): Michigan may have beaten up Penn State pretty badly last year, but the Wolverines have had a rough season – and it's not about to get any better. After the bye week, the Nittany Lions are well-rested and hungry for a whiteout victory. Although Michigan is ranked with the top defensive QB, they will not be able to keep up with Penn State.
Penn State 28, Michigan 13.
