Penn State Predictions: Handling the Hoosiers

Well, that was close.

The Penn State walk-off win at Iowa stunned our staff, which had predicted pretty lopsided wins. Intern Abbi Sales was the closest, predicting a 7-point Penn State win.

This week, the Nittany Lions return to Beaver Stadium to face Indiana, a team which will present some problems for the PSU defense. However, playing at home should help the Lions. We’re guessing there will be an electric atmosphere for the “Generations of Greatness” Game.

Let’s cut to the chase and see what our staff thinks of this one.

Michael Kresovich, sports intern (season record 4-0): After escaping Iowa last weekend in exciting fashion, Penn State returns home to face Indiana. Indiana gave Ohio State trouble in the first half. This was until Ohio State’s high-powered offense got rolling. Expect the same this weekend. Penn State will continue to dominate on the offensive side of the ball. With the conference’s leader in all-purpose yards, Saquon Barkley, the Lions versatile offense will continue to disrupt the opposing team’s defensive schemes. Indiana incorporates a two-quarterback system into their offensive game plan alongside a few weapons outside of the hashes lined up at wide receiver. The Nittany Lions’ defense will face their first true test of the season.

Penn State 38, Indiana 21.

Matt Lingerman, sports intern (Season record 4-0): Although Penn State left Iowa City unscathed last Saturday, James Franklin is going to want his offense to finish off more drives with seven points. Considering the Nittany Lions dominated the time of possession battle and gained almost 600 yards of offense, their 21 points against the Hawkeyes were pedestrian. Franklin's team will come out firing against an Indiana defense which has given up at least 34 points in each of its games this season. Expect another strong performance on home turf for the Nittany Lions.

Penn State 38, Indiana 10.

Chris Morelli, managing editor (season record 4-0): With last week’s test behind them, the Nittany Lions return home, which is a very good thing. Look for Barkley to have another big game and the defense to get at least a couple of turnovers. Indiana has some weapons, so they’ll score. But they are no match for the No. 4 team in the land. The throwback uniforms will be a hit. Speaking of throwbacks, Beaver Stadium will be rocking like it is 1994.

Penn State 38, Indiana 24.

John Patishnock, beat writer (season record 4-0): The Nittany Lions need to make the Hoosiers one-dimensional on offense. IU quarterback Richard Lagow has thrown three interceptions through three games, and Penn State has a positive turnover ratio (+6). If the Lions claim an early lead and force the Hoosiers to play from behind, Penn State’s defense should continue to be disruptive.

Penn State 45, Indiana 21.

Abbi Sales, sports intern (season record 4-0): After a nail-biter game last weekend, I predict this game to be somewhat similar. Last year’s matchup against Indiana almost snatched away Penn State's Big Ten Championship dreams (and victory), lighting a fire under the Nittany Lions for this year's game.
