Happy Valley Summer Bucket List

There are a lot of lesser-known summer fun opportunities right at your fingertips here in Happy Valley. These local ideas make for a killer summer bucket list that is both affordable and enjoyable for all ages!

Whether you are headed to Penn’s Cave for Karoondinha Festival in July or just to explore the beautiful wildlife and infamous limestone cavern, you can’t go wrong with a trip here. This natural landmark is a must if you live or are visiting the Centre County region. You can take a boat tour of the remarkable cave and hear all about The Legend of Penn’s Cave, or take an off-road Jeep tour of Cave Rock Mountain. Set in the beautiful Valley of Karoondinha, this place has so much history and is home to North American wildlife which you can also see on tour. This summer, don’t miss out on a chance to see America’s only all water-cavern and don’t pass up an opportunity to learn about the geology, biology and geography of the center of our state.

Ice cream and summer go hand in hand but this year, try adding a twist to your ordinary ice cream and stop by Momotaro for some rolled ice cream. Momotaro opened in downtown State College on College Ave. in March, bringing the rolled ice cream craze right to us. Rolled ice cream originated in Thailand, but the trend has now swept across America. The store is a bakery that sells baked goods and tea products, as well as ice cream. You can order a variety of ice cream flavors, add multiple toppings and watch the ice cream get rolled right in front of you. Their specialty is green tea rolled ice cream, so definitely make it a point to come by this summer.

Nature lovers will love Whipple Dam this summer. A beach, kayaking, picnic areas, swimming and beach volleyball make for a great summer afternoon or family day. There are also camping sites for overnight stays equipped with fire pits for summer bonfires and access to the Whipple Dam hiking trails. Catch some of the Music on the Beach summer concerts series on June 17, July 15 and August 19!

Arts Fest is an event everyone in State College looks forward to every summer. For those of you unfamiliar with this tradition, the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts takes place July 13-16 and celebrates art in all its forms. There will be sidewalk sales, street painting, Bookfest, sand sculptures and festival races. This weekend is meant for all ages as there are plenty of activities for children, and events adults can enjoy too, like the many scheduled music performances.

If you are a big fan of action movies or are looking for something that is action-packed, Base Tactics will give you and your group an entirely different laser tag experience. This is laser tag revamped with an outdoor course, different gameplay choices and team-based missions. Inspired by video games like Halo or Call of Duty, this is a great and exhilarating group outing that lets you act out your favorite video game or action movie.

If you're looking to find somewhere to brunch one afternoon this summer, head to the Naked Egg Cafe. This spot if perfect for egg lovers as this cafe cooks them up in every way imaginable, but they also have a variety of delicious items on their breakfast and lunch menu. Add this cute cafe to your bucket list this summer; you won’t regret it.

Make sure to check some of these places off your bucket list this summer and enjoy soaking up the Happy Valley sun.
