Trace McSorley Is Already in the 2017 Heisman Conversation

NFL.com has named Trace McSorley at No. 5 on its list of the top 10 Heisman candidates for 2017.

NFL.com points out that though it seems early to make assumptions for next year, the 2017 Heisman discussion actually begins in late 2016 when players perform well in postseason games. McSorley is already one for one on that front.

Here's what NFL.com had to say about the quarterback:

"McSorley's efforts this year helped the Nittany Lions get back into national prominence. The sophomore passer took a lot of shots from Wisconsin's defense early in the Big Ten Championship Game, but he returned fire with big throws downfield, leading the team to a comeback victory. If McSorley follows that tough, efficient performance with another one in the Rose Bowl, even running back Saquon Barkley (who deserves Heisman mention himself) will be advertising his quarterback as a contender for the award."

Interestingly, McSorley even comes in above Alabama QB Jalen Hurts on the list, which is as follows:

  1. Lamar Jackson, QB, Louisville (Junior in 2017)
  2. Sam Darnold, QB, USC (Sophomore in 2017)
  3. Baker Mayfield, QB, Oklahoma (Senior in 2017)
  4. Ed Oliver, DT, Houston (Sophomore in 2017)
  5. Trace McSorley, QB, Penn State (Junior in 2017)
  6. Jalen Hurts, QB, Alabama (Sophomore in 2017)
  7. Deondre Francois, QB, Florida State (Sophomore in 2017)
  8. Derrius Guice, RB, LSU (Junior in 2017)
  9. Shane Buechele, QB, Texas (Sophomore in 2017)
  10. Jake Browning, QB, Washington (Junior in 2017)

It may be early, but it's a pretty nice to see McSorley's name in the mix regardless.
