Get Your Veggie On: Top Spots to Find Meatless Meals
Is being a vegetarian a big missed steak? All joking aside, sometimes it’s hard to find a decent meatless meal when you go out to eat. Puny salads, stand aside. Whether you’re a hard core vegetarian or vegan, or prefer to skip the meat every now and then, Happy Valley restaurants serve up some pretty fantastic and hearty meatless meals. Here are a few of our favorite places to find them…
Otto’s Pub and Brewery
While Otto’s prides themselves on serving local pasture raised beef fed with the brewery’s spent grain, they’re also looking out for their herbivore friends too. Their regular menu feature 12 vegetarian and 6 vegan dishes (in addition to clearly marked vegetarian and vegan sides and sauces), and they feature a special menu with exclusive non-meat and non-dairy dishes each Wednesday. Popular choices include tofu wings, the Asian cashew and bean burger, and French onion soup. Plus, the beer is always meat free.

The Dining Room at the Nittany Lion Inn
Show your Penn State pride with a meal at the Nittany Lion Inn. The menu features a full vegetarian and vegan section to include hearty meals like roasted beet pasta and chickpea and kale stew. There are plenty of seafood dishes available, too.

Kelly's Steak and Seafood
Sure, the name alone tells you that this restaurant's gig is meat, but their vegetarian stuffed portobello entree is as hearty as any steak they serve. It's a large Portobello mushroom that's marinated in pesto and grilled, stuffed with roasted red bell pepper, sundried tomato, spinach and Chevre cheese. Trust us, you won't miss the meat.

American Ale House and Grill
The Ale House has some creative vegetarian dishes on the menu, including a Golden Nectarine Salad, 3 Cheeses and Asparagus Sandwich, and Marinated Tofu entree. Pescetarians, be sure to check out the Really Swell Steam Bar with fantastic, fresh, made-to-order steamed seafood dishes (we highly recommend the house pan roast).

Serving some of the best Indian food in our area, India Pavilion has 17 vegetarian options on their dinner menu, from Aloo Gobhi (cauliflower and potatoes cooked with onions, ginger and garlic) to Shahi Paneer Korma (cubes of homemade cheese cooked in a creamy tomato sauce with herbs and spices and garnished with nuts and raisins). Or, you can try select vegetarian dishes on India Pavilion's daily lunch buffet, which also includes a salad bar, appetizers and dessert.

Mad Mex has plenty of vegetarian choices on their menu--34 to be exact--and indicates many more that could easily be made vegetarian with a simple substitution. Popular choices include the Angry Hippie Burrito (grilled Portobello, fresh spicy spinach, pico de gallo and black beans) or the Black Beanie Quesadeenie (a quesadilla made with black bean dip, diced pineapple and Monterey Jack cheese, with pico de gallo on the side). Make your meal vegan by requesting dairy-free cheese and sour cream.
