Alternative and affordable game-day lodgings

All children in elementary school are taught the four seasons—fall, winter, spring and summer—but, for some reason, teachers neglect to teach the fifth and arguably most important season of all: football season!

Bringing with it leaves that only bloom white and blue, football season is fast approaching Happy Valley—and so are Penn State fans far and wide.

But, where, one may ask, can all these fans possibly lodge themselves during those weekends? Some of us don't have conveniently-located relatives, and hotels book quickly.

Well, you're in luck, because we've found the answer! Check out the following list of Airbnbs, Bed and Breakfasts and fabulous inns in order to know where to rest those Nittany Lion ears and paws for the weekends, in places both affordable and homey.

1: Our Fair Lady, A Victorian Bed and Breakfast

313 E. Linn Street, Bellefonte, 16823 USA

Ever want to combine the blue and white fever with an 1883 second-empire home? Thought so! Our Fair Lady offers many treats including queen-size beds, afternoon wine and cheese hour, high speed wireless internet—can you imagine if they kept the speed of 1883’s internet?—and an elegant ambiance brought to life through stained-glass foyer doors, chandeliers and hardwood floors. Guests can feel like royalty as they descend from Our Fair Lady and travel the short nine miles to Beaver Stadium home to Our Fair Lion.

Nightly rate: $130-200

2: The Limestone Inn

490 Meckley Road, State College, PA 16801

Fun fact: the Nittany Lion shrine is made of Indiana limestone. Another fun fact? The Limestone Inn is a great place to stay for Penn State football weekend. Why? Okay, a lot of questions are being answered, but here we go: the Limestone Inn is at the base of Tussey Mountain, perfectly situated for guests to witness breathtaking views throughout their stay. Rooms include private bathrooms and flat screen TVs, and the common room features a summer porch overlooking a water fishery rife with brown trout. Talk about steals and deals.

Nightly rate: Varies on football weekends

3: Full Apartment in the Heart of State College

Cable TV, free Wi-Fi, kitchen, dryer, washer and a 30-second walk away from the Penn State campus: Is this a wish-list worthy air B&B or what? The two-bedroom apartment offers a State College getaway that puts its guests in the heart of all the action including restaurants and bars fans should definitely hit up after a big game!

4: Bright and Modern Private Apartment – Centrally Located

This newly renovated air B&B is located on North Atherton Street, near the Penn State Campus, Beaver Stadium, the BJC and all the Penn State swag you need for your tailgate. You can’t get any closer to the hub of Happy Valley than that! The host tries to make guests feel right at home with free tea and coffee, TV, free parking, and Wi-Fi. This lower level apartment can fit six people—though there is only one queen bed, so start flipping coins!

Nightly rate: $78

5: Mcburney Manor

13206 Greenwood Rd, McAlevy's Fort, PA 16652

While some things lay between a rock and a hard place, Mcburney Manor rests perfectly between Belleville and State College. Its 160-year-old spirit still fills the building, even with the newly installed modern bathroom. The bed & breakfast is home to the “bake house,” where a recently restored oven promises exquisite aromas of freshly baked bread each Tuesday and Friday morning. State College is only 20 minutes away, but other nearby attractions include the Raystown Dam, vineyards and wineries, as well as nature spots with picnic areas and national state parks.

Nightly rate: Nightly Rate: $130 - $225

6: Reynolds Mansion Bed and Breakfast

101 W Linn Street , Bellefonte, PA 16823

The Reynolds Mansion Bed and Breakfast may not feature Ryan Reynolds himself, but that’s quite alright, because what it does offer is beautiful woodwork, spacious rooms with private baths and a three-course gourmet breakfast every morning. One possible room this Bed and Breakfast offers is none other than the Nittany Blue room, capacity: three people. Enjoy the fireplace, queen sized bed and Jacuzzi tub in a room flavored all blue and white. Oh, and be sure to visit the mansion’s Snuggery, where complimentary glasses of brandy and chocolates are provided—hopefully to celebrate a Penn State win!
