Weekend events: Plays, a country concert and PSU sports

STATE COLLEGE – We just can’t seem to get Old Man Winter out of here.

Just when we think we’ve turned the corner, guess what? Winter returns. So here we are, in late March with snow to deal with. But don’t worry – even though there’s some white stuff on the ground, there’s still plenty to do in Happy Valley.

Here are some of the highlights:


Penn State sports – There are just two athletic events scheduled for Penn State on Friday. The NCAA Fencing Championships begin at 10 a.m. at University Park. Weather permitting, Penn State softball will take on Maryland at 6 p.m. at Beard Field, weather permitting.

“Much Ado About Nothing” – Tempest Productions will take over the Attic at the State Theatre for performances throughout the day. It begins at 11 a.m. with the New Play Reading Series: The Sixth Day, continues at with the New Play Reading Series: Sacred Trauma (1 p.m.), The Women (4 p.m.), The Comedy of Errors (6 p.m.) and The Belle of Amherst (8 p.m.)

Miranda Lambert – The country music star brings her “Livin’ Like Hippies” Tour to the Bryce Jordan Center. Gates open at 6 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Great seats are still available. Visit www.bjc.psu.edu for tickets.


Penn State sports – There are three events on the docket on Saturday: Day 2 of the NCAA Fencing Championships begin at 10 a.m. Men’s lacrosse takes on Cleveland State at 1 p.m. and softball faces Maryland at 3 p.m. … weather permitting (again).

"Mr. Rogers Neighborhood" 50th anniversary celebration – Join WPSU and the American Philatelic Society for a special dedication of the release of the Mister Rogers 50th anniversary stamp. Mr. McFeely ("Speedy Delivery") will be on hand for the dedication of the stamp. The event will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. at the American Philatelic Society in Bellefonte. 


Spring Greenhouse Opening – In spite of the cold temperatures, Tait Farms is expected to have a spring greenhouse opening from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tait Farms is located at 179 Tait Road in Centre Hall. Call (814) 466-3411 to see if the event is still taking place.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Denver – The Penn State men’s hockey team faces Denver in the NCAA Tournament at 7 p.m. in Allentown, Pa. Can’t make the trip? No worries, there are plenty of places right here in Happy Valley to watch the game.

“Spring Awakening” – The groundbreaking put wildly popular play will be performed at both 1:30 and 7:30 p.m. at Schwab Auditorium. The rock musical tells the story of teenagers discovering the inner and outer tumult of teen sexuality. For tickets, visit: www.eventbrite.com


Penn State sports – There are just two Penn State home events on the schedule. Day 3 of the NCAA Fencing Championships gets under way at 10 a.m. At 1 p.m., Penn State softball concludes its three-game series with Maryland at Beard Field.
