Weekend events: Hockey and hoops take over

STATE COLLEGE – The new year is off and running.

There are record cold temperatures in Happy Valley as the first weekend of the new year approaches. According to AccuWeather, Saturday’s high is expected to be 10 degrees in State College, while Sunday’s will get all the way to a balmy 23. With that in mind, we’ve found some amazing indoor activities to check out so you can stay warm and out of the frigid air.

FRIDAY, JAN. 5

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Wisconsin – The Penn State men’s hockey team finally returns to Pegula Ice Arena for a critical Big Ten game against the Badgers. The Nittany Lions enter the game at 11-7-2 overall. The puck drops at 7 p.m.

Penn State men’s basketball vs. Northwestern – If you can’t snag tickets to the hockey game, there are plenty of tickets available for the Nittany Lions’ Big Ten game with Northwestern at the Bryce Jordan Center. The game tips at 8 p.m.

SATURDAY, JAN. 6

Penn State women’s gymnastics vs. Eastern Michigan – The Penn State women’s gymnastics team is in action on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Rec Hall. If you’ve never seen the women’s gymnastics team up close and personal, this is your chance. Tickets are available at the Rec Hall box office.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Wisconsin – The Penn State men’s hockey team closes out the two-game homestand with another game against the Badgers. Once again, puck drops at 7 p.m.

SUNDAY, JAN. 7

WPSU Presents: Victoria Season 2 – Have you missed Victoria? Well, you can join WPSU for an advance screening to kick off season 2. Jenna Coleman (Doctor Who) returns as the young queen who wants it all – romance, power, an heir and personal freedom. The screening begins at 2:30 p.m. and is a free general admission event.
