Weekend events: Four-day weekend arrives with plenty to do

It’s almost the weekend. For many, it’s a long weekend. A four-day weekend, to be exact.

While most Americans will spend Thanksgiving Day eating turkey and watching football, the following three days are up in the air. Even though it is a holiday weekend, there are plenty of weekend events to keep you and the family busy.

Let’s take a closer look at what’s happening in and around Happy Valley Thanksgiving weekend:

Black Friday – It’s almost here. If you like large crowds and adventure (OK, chaos), we urge you to get out there and spend like crazy. Be on the lookout for good deals by shopping local – not just at the big box stores. Downtown State College and downtown Bellefonte have plenty to offer.

Penn State men’s basketball vs. Oral Roberts – Need a break from the Black Friday shopping? Stop by the Bryce Jordan Center and check out head coach Patrick Chambers and his red-hot Nittany Lions. Tip-off against is set for 3 p.m.

For tickets, visit www.gopsusports.com.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Michigan State – The Nittany Lions return to Pegula Ice Arena on Friday night against Big Ten rival Michigan State. Face off is set for 7 p.m., so if you are lucky enough to have tickets to hoops and hockey, you can make it a doubleheader of Penn State sports.

Christmas Crystals at the Cave – The first-ever Christmas Crystals at the Cave will be held from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Penn’s Cave and Wildlife Park in Centre Hall. Celebrate the start of the holiday season with lantern tours, Prospector Pete’s Merry Maze and large light displays.

Sampling Saturday – The Tait Farm Harvest Shop will hold a “Saturday Sampling” of holiday cheeses and Italian Pizzelles. A pizzelle is an Italian waffle cookie. The ones at Tait Farm are all natural and gluten-free. The event runs from 2 to 4 p.m. at Tait Farm Foods, 179 Tait Road in Centre Hall.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Michigan State – The teams meet again on Saturday night as the two-game series concludes at Pegula Ice Arena. The Nittany Lions will try to get on a roll as they get into Big Ten Conference play.

For tickets, check out www.ticketmaster.com.

Heartland Christmas Wine Tour – A Heartland Christmas Wine Tour will be held from noon to 5 p.m. At Happy Valley Winery, Seven Mountains Wine Cellar and Mount Nittany Winery. Tickets are $15. For more information, visit www.pawinetrail.com.

Christmas Crystals at the Cave – If you couldn’t make it on Saturday, there will be another chance to see the first-ever Christmas Crystals at the Cave on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Celebrate the start of the holiday season with lantern tours, Prospector Pete’s Merry Maze and large light displays.

For more information, visit www.pennscave.com.

“The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” – The Christmas comedy “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” will be staged at The Playhouse at McConnellstown. The play is based on the novel of the same name and presents a widely beloved holiday tale that is warm, incredibly funny and full of characters both relatable and utterly unique. The play hits the stage at 2 p.m.

Enjoy the weekend and Happy Thanksgiving!
