Weekend events: Del Rey performs; Skeller closes

UNIVERSITY PARK – It’s the last weekend in January, which is usually pretty uneventful. But this weekend is unlike most in Happy Valley.

The All-American Rathskeller is closing its doors – for good. On Saturday, the ‘Skeller will hold its “last call” for patrons. If you are planning to get down there before the doors close for good, you better plan accordingly. The Skeller is expecting long wait times and with temperatures well below freezing, be sure to bundle up.

The Skeller closing is just one of several big events in Happy Valley this weekend. Here’s how the weekend breaks down:

Penn State wrestling vs. Minnesota – The Penn State wrestling team has its sights set on another National Championship and will take on Minnesota Friday night at Rec Hall. The match is sold out, but you can look for re-sale tickets at www.ticketmaster.com or www.stubhub.com. The match begins at 7 p.m.

Lana Del Rey – The talented singer/songwriter performs at the Bryce Jordan Center as a stop on her “LA to the Moon” Tour. She will be joined by special guest Kali Uchis. Ticket prices start at $29.50 and are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Last Call at the All-American Rathskeller – The iconic Penn State bar will close its doors for good on Saturday, but not before an All-Star lineup of musical acts play there one final time. The band lineup looks like this: Velveeta, JR and Sharon, Lowjack, Table Ten and the Skoal Bros. Plan for long wait times and a packed house. Bundle up and take some Kleenex. There won’t be a dry eye in the joint.

Penn State men’s basketball vs. Rutgers – The Penn State men’s basketball team takes on Rutgers at 4 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. The Nittany Lions need to string together some wins if they are going to make a run at the NCAA Tournament. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com or stop by the ticket office at the BJC.
