Big shows in Happy Valley are right around the corner

UNIVERSITY PARK – Want to see a big show this spring? Think you have to go to New York City or elsewhere to see something special?

Think again.

Penn State’s Center for the Performing Arts has several big-name shows on the horizon. There are three big ones coming up in this month and next. You don’t have to leave Happy Valley to see these great shows. Live out of town? Book a hotel, have a great dinner and check out a big-name show.

Here’s the best of the best:

Che Malambo

Eisenhower Auditorium

This all-male Argentinian dance company focuses on percussive dance for their music spectacles. The men will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 15, at the Eisenhower Auditorium. Their footwork, drumming, rhythmic stomping and unique song stylings have roots in seventeenth century South American lowland plains. Such movement and dance evolved from Argentine cowboys who had competitive duels to show strength and agility. Such history and evolution of dance is a beautiful experience to capture in your butterfly net this spring!

“Dirty Dancing: The Classic Story on Stage”

Eisenhower Auditorium

Dig through the journey Baby takes one summer when she’s exposed to love, dance and challenging circumstances that make her question and shake the foundation she sought shelter in all her life. On Wednesday, March 21 and Thursday, March 22, at 7:30 p.m., “Dirty Dancing” will sweep the stage of the Eisenhower Auditorium to deliver audiences a tale of not only romance, but also of staying true to oneself. Resist the urge to join the cast on stage as they sing the story’s favorites like “Hungry Eyes” and “(I’ve Had) the Time of my Life.”

“Jersey Boys”

Eisenhower Auditorium

In 2006, “Jersey Boys” won the Tony, Grammy and Olivier Award for Best Musical about Rock and Roll Hall of Famers. The story can truly hit close to home because it’s about a true tale of four blue-collar kids making it big in the pop music industry. They wrote their own songs, created new sound and technique and sold 175 million records worldwide. Enjoy a night of an inspiration and music; the performance will include hit songs like “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” and “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You.” Your eyes won’t let go of the stage as the Jersey Boys dance, sing and entertain.

Tickets for all three shows are available at the Eisenhower Box Office or online at
