New and Improved: What’s up and What’s Upcoming in Happy Valley
One look at downtown State College and it’s obvious that the region is in the midst of a growth spurt. Cranes tower over construction projects while new businesses are taking over vacant buildings. It’s almost hard to keep up with the news about what stores and restaurants are going where, so we’ve compiled a list of the newest businesses—and those we’re eagerly anticipating—in Happy Valley.
Corner of Garner Street and College Ave
If you’re in the mood for reasonably priced hibachi, Tokyo Sushi is the place to be. With more than 70 styles of sushi rolls and traditional Asian entrées, this new restaurant is sure to be a hit in the State College market. The only downside is that space limitations prevent them from offering the traditional sit-down hibachi tables, but the fresh and flavorful food is reason enough to stop by.
129 South Fraser Street
Following the fire at their Pleasant Gap location, Fasta and Ravioli Co. has reopened in a new location on Fraser Street. This was the location of their original store, which was occupied for the past several years by Good Seed Baking Co. until its recent closure. Their Pleasant Gap location is still under reconstruction but will reopen soon. A mainstay of local farmers’ markets, Fasta & Ravioli Co. produces fresh pasta made from locally sourced ingredients. They also offer olive oil and sauces to complete any pasta dish.
127 West Beaver Avenue
After finding success four years ago when he opened Penn Kebab on College Avenue, restaurateur Sait Satici decided to try his hand at a Turkish-based breakfast and pide (similar to pizza) storefront along Beaver Avenue. While Penn Kebab is a walk-up-and-order restaurant, Penn Pide has an inviting seating area for customers who prefer to stay awhile and enjoy their meal.
201 Elmwood Street
Happy Valley’s premier source of organic gardening materials and hydroponic supplies is tucked in the barn next to Happy Valley Brewing Company on Elmwood Street, one of the main arteries leading into the quaint village of Lemont. OGC offers grow lights, organic fertilizer, meters and test kits, natural pest repellent and more. Their knowledgeable staff can guide you through the process of organic gardening and help you make educated decisions about proper soil nutrition while finding natural alternatives to harmful additives. Serving Central Pennsylvania since 2006 in their Williamsport store, they’ve recently expanded to the State College market and hope to provide an educational space for nontoxic garden maintenance.
559 N. Pennsylvania Avenue, Centre Hall
After 25 years as The Mount Nittany Inn, the iconic restaurant sitting at the top of Mt. Nittany Ridge has been purchased by Harrison’s Wine Grill and Catering and will be used as a special events center. Opening this summer, Above the Valley will host weddings, mitzvahs, special occasions, conferences and other memorable events. The space can accommodate over 200 guests with ample space for buffets and dance floors. Smaller rooms are also available for more intimate affairs, but no matter what size your party is, guests will be delighted by Harrison’s award-winning food and beautiful views of the Valley.
Coming soon to the Fraser Centre...
That’s right—the Fraser Centre is no longer a figment of Happy Valley's collective imagination! Construction is well underway on the 13-story mixed-use development spanning the Beaver Ave to Calder Way block of Fraser Street. While the structure doesn't meet technical criteria for skyscraper status, it will certainly be a conspicuous addition to our modest skyline. The Centre, set to be up and running by the end of this year, will house a Hyatt Place hotel, 26 luxury condominiums and these downtown newcomers:
With a Target store already successfully anchored on Colonnade Boulevard, there’s little to say about this national retailer that State College residents don’t already know. This new store will occupy space in the Fraser Centre and will certainly simplify students’ lives.
This soon-to-be opened restaurant is owned by two Penn State graduates who have found a niche in craft beer and scratch kitchen markets of central Pennsylvania. When it opens in the fall, Federal Taphouse will feature 100 craft beers along with a farm-to-table menu boasting local meats and vegetables alongside artisan pizza. They’ll also offer off-site event catering.
A newcomer to the State College retail market, this Swedish-based clothing store will be a welcome addition to the downtown shopping scene. Their inexpensive lines include business casual, men’s wear and children’s clothing. In keeping with the area’s interest in eco-friendly practices, they also accept clothing donations and offer in-store coupons for used garments.
Ah, the clichés are all finally out. “Fall in love.” “Pumpkin spice and everything nice,” “Fall for these deals”—you get the idea.
