Where to Get Your Daily Cup of Joe

We all need coffee. And we need a great go-to spot to get it. While big box coffee shops like Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts can do in a pinch, Happy Valley has some unique local places to get your daily cup of joe. Here are a few of our favorites.

Webster's Bookstore Café

Webster's is much more than a coffee shop. It's where you can get lost in a good book. And even take one home. Webster's is the proud descendant of a long line of State College used book shops dating back to 1974. In addition to used books and tasty coffees and teas, the cafe features live performances, open mic nights, free tango lessons, a food menu with great gluten-free and vegetarian and vegan options, and used vinyl records for sale. Try the brown cow: a latte with Meyer Dairy chocolate milk.

Saint's Café

Great coffee in a great location: Saint’s Café serves up premium gourmet coffee to caffeine lovers on the coveted Beaver Avenue. The prime downtown spot that allows for easy in easy out ordering when you’re perusing the streets of Happy Valley.

123 W. Beaver Ave., State College; 814-238-5707;

Rothrock Coffee

Coffee meets BMX biking. That’s right, Rothrock Coffee is owned by pro BMX biker Jamie Bestwick, winner of the 2014 Laureus World Sports Award. Bestwick and his crew source, roast, cup, test, brew, and create the best coffee possible. Stop by to try a traditional coffee drink, indulge with an Affagato (espresso and ice cream), or take a pound or two of fresh roasted beans home with you. It’s a great place to relax with a great cup of coffee, or get some work or Internet browsing done. Bonus: there’s free parking at this out-of-downtown location. NATIONAL COFFEE DAY SPECIAL (9/29): $1 off DRIP coffee, $2 off bags of coffee

Café Lemont

This hidden gem is nestled in—you guessed it—Lemont, and is a quaint place to get a good cup of coffee and bite to eat. The café is spaced out among several rooms of a converted house, and there’s a secluded outdoor patio for enjoying your coffee al fresco. Organic coffee from around the world is fresh roasted on site. Breakfast and lunch are served all day, all made from scratch from locally-sourced ingredients. Popular menu items include quiche, breakfast sandwiches, and oatmeal bars.

921 Pike St. #103, Lemont; 814-321-4337;

The Cheese Shoppe

Another hidden gem, in a basement along Calder Way, is WC Clarke's The Cheese Shoppe. Yes, cheese is the name of their game (and you'll find an extensive selection of gourmet cheeses), but this is a great place to grab a cup of coffee on the run. Choose from a rotating selection of freshly-roasted coffee, fill your cup, and leave your money on the counter. This place is pay by the honor system, so you can make your own change. Note: It is a cheese shop that also has coffee, so seating is ample.

Dunkin' Donuts

There are times when the big box shop is just what you need. For National Coffee Day (September 29), you can get a medium hot coffee for just $0.66. Plus, Dunkin is celebrating 66 years of their delicious coffee today. NATIONAL COFFEE DAY SPECIAL (9/29): Medium coffee for $0.66
