Here's your burger bucket list
It’s National Cheeseburger Day and there are some pretty great cheeseburgers grilling, right here in our own backyard! These 11 burgers are simply must-have. We know you probably don’t like being bossed around, but you’ll thank us later. It wouldn’t be a burger bucket list without giving a shout out to this farm-to-table joint at Toftrees. All burgers are hand formed daily with a blend of sirloin, chuck, brisket, and short rib. If you’re in the mood for something spicy, try the Barnburger, topped with ghost pepper cheese, beer battered onion rings, jalapenos, apple butter barbeque, and chipotle lime aioli. Don’t worry – you can curb the heat with one of the famous hard milkshakes made with Creamery ice cream!
Whiskers, the casual pub-style restaurant at The Nittany Lion Inn, is making a name for itself for its creative, delicious use of fresh and local ingredients. Their burgers are sourced from local farms and served on a roll from Gemelli Bakers with hand cut French fries. Their “Local 8” is a flavor explosion with caramelized onion, bacon, cheddar and fried local organic egg.
Otto’s has fantastic beer, but you may not have known that they have the best specialty burger around. They feed the beef spent grain from the beer making process to keep everything fresh and local. The Cowboy Burger is an Otto’s favorite, and it’s easy to see why: a 1/2 lb. of Otto’s beef topped with Black Mo BBQ sauce, Hogs Galore bacon, stoutie onions, and cheddar cheese.
This place gets their beef from down the road at a local farm. Its grass fed and the beef and buns are simply amazing. Top it off with one of their unique toppings like Apple Pepper Jack. You’ll think you’ve died and gone to heaven. (Don’t worry, you probably haven’t).
Has a special burger night every Thursday that’s worth talking about. The burgers are delicious, the signature being the Hubie, but they are made even better by their fantastic fresh cut fries.
HVBC is trending, and for good reason. Every dish is exploding with complex flavors, deliciously plated, and paired with a perfect brew. Try their Barnyard Burger – 8 oz. of steak burger with grilled onions, applewood-smoked bacon, cheddar, bbq mayo and Texas toast. It’s sure to pair nicely with your brew of choice.
This historic Boalsburg landmark has a burger night with an incredible atmosphere. Good burgers and tons of fun await you on the Diamond. Go classic with the Duffyburger – it has good ol’ American cheese and caramelized onions – or get adventurous with the Coffee Dusted Burger or the 1819, which is topped with a fried egg. You may have to make a couple trips.
The rebranded fine dining hot spot is open with some sizzling new treats – try their house blend beef burger, available on the lunch menu, for a cool riff on New American Cuisine! Their burger is grass fed bison with foie gras, Roquefort, sundried tomatoes, and pickled cipollini onions, all topped with bacon mayo.
Off the beaten track in Pleasant Gap, this tavern brings the flavor. Their Cowboy burger is covered in ham, bacon, roasted tomato mayo, and pepper jack cheese for a darn good eat. They’ve also got Portabella and BBQ burgers.
It’s a chain, sure. But they’re so good at what they do. Walk in, crack a few peanuts, and enjoy the greasiest meal of your life. It’s a good greasy, the kind that satisfies your watering mouth and makes you want to come back for more that same day. They make the burger just how you want it, so come prepared.

Hey, you’ve got to trust an establishment with red meat right in its name. At Kelly’s, our must-try is the Kobe Burger – this 1/2 lb. American Kobe beef patty is peppercorn crusted, served with Wasabi Aioli, crispy pickled red onion, juicy tomato and shredded iceberg lettuce on an onion poppy seed brioche roll.
