Food trucks make international flavors a moveable feast

By Laura Zaks

Fine dining and wining does have its perks, but there’s just something fun and special about ordering a delicious meal at a food truck and eating out on the go. Lucky for us Nittany Lions, Happy Valley is truly a food truck nation, raising its flag to sizzling drinks and scrumptious take-out food matched only by outstanding, friendly service.

If you’re walking down E Beaver Ave after a book date at Webster’s or maybe even a simple haircut, you’ll run into Shaker’s Grill, a Mediterranean and Middle Eastern food vendor. Their platters include chicken, kofta, falalfel and stew with rice, with the latter three meats also available in subs that come with a side of salad and humus. So, shake things up and head on over!

Still hungry? Looking for Mexican food with a sprinkle of Arabic fusion? Yallah Taco at McAllister Alley just might be what you need. The menu’s most popular choice is the “3 Tacos,” where you can choose any meat to be topped with chipotle sour cream, lettuce, tomatoes, cilantro, Yallah sauce and more! As for any rice bowl lovers, Yallah throws a fiesta for your taste buds with their yummy bowls filled with corn, lettuce, beans, cheese and any choice of meat. And this party just goes on, as Yallah also offers burritos, quesadillas, nachos and fan-favorite sides like chips and salsa, guacamole or Queso.

Perhaps, you are into the farmers market scene. Happy Valley’s most renowned food vendors come out to North Atherton Farmers Market, which is held all year round. Brazilian Munchies, a food truck based in Bellefonte, comes out to support the happiest valley with their bacon-wrapped chicken skewer and X-tudo Burger, a marinated beef patty that is topped with cheese, smoked ham, fried egg, tomato and lettuce. As these are Brazilian Munchies, be sure to check out this truck’s Brazilian burrito and Brazilian beef stew; both come with a side of yucca fries that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. For dessert, be sure to try their Passion Fruit Mousse!

Another food truck to check out at the North Atherton Farmers Market is Nomad Kitchen, a vendor home to yummy foods like Moroccan chicken kabobs, falafel pita sandwiches and different kinds of pizza. Nomad Kitchen uses seasonal, local and homegrown ingredients that are then combined with exotic spices to make your meal as unique as can be.
