Best Ice Cream in Happy Valley

Penn State Berkey Creamery
119 Rodney A. Erickson Food Science Building

If Beaver Stadium is the most famous destination on campus, the Creamery is not far behind. Since 1865, the Berkey Creamery has been scooping some of the most popular, and best tasting, ice cream in the country. The Creamery has over 100 flavors of ice cream in total and they are always scooping at least 20 different flavors. And don't worry, even if your favorite flavor isn't on hand when you visit – I've never heard a bad word said about a single flavor.

Our Facebook friends here at are definitely passionate about the Creamery – we posted a picture a few weeks ago of the ever-popular Peachy Paterno and Death By Chocolate Flavors and our fans came out overwhelmingly in support of Peachy Paterno but honestly, there is no wrong answer. Another fan favorite is the outstanding Bananas Foster ice cream – banana ice cream with a caramel swirl.

Best bet: WPSU Coffee Break – coffee ice cream with chocolate chips

Meyer Dairy Store
2390 S. Atherton St.

The Meyer family is just about as famous locally for their ice cream and dairy products as the Berkey Creamery. Since 1887, the Meyer family has been supplying the area with some of the finest milk and ice cream you can find anywhere. The current Meyer Dairy Store opened its doors in 1970 and perhaps the best part is that you can still buy their milk in a glass bottle. Meyer Dairy Store is definitely worth the short drive from campus whether you're in the mood for an ice cream cone or want to pick up milk or creamer for the house.

Perhaps the best treat at Meyer’s isn’t even on the board and is kept in the back – homemade lemon custard. Sometimes things just taste better when you think it’s a secret. Another great choice at Meyer’s that you can’t find anywhere else is the Maple Walnut ice cream.

Best bet: Chocolate Chip Brownie Dough ice cream

So what is the best ice cream in all of Happy Valley?

The Creamery is an ice cream legend in State College – and really across the country to anyone that ever went to Penn State. If you're in town you just HAVE to stop at the Creamery regardless of how much you may have eaten for dinner or how bad it is to think about having a milkshake after tailgating all afternoon.

And in my opinion – while you’ll get arguably the best malted milkshake you’ve ever had at Meyer Dairy Store – the best ice cream in all of State College is the Creamery's WPSU Coffee Break – it didn't make it into their Ice Cream Hall of Fame by accident!

There's nothing better than a good old fashioned ice cream argument – and we're always up for trying new flavors here at – so tell us, what do you think is the absolute best, to-die-for ice cream in all of State College? And in one of the oldest rivalries in town, what is the best spot for ice cream – The Creamery or Meyer Dairy?
