Discovery Space is a growing science center and makerspace based in State College. Our science center offers interactive STEM exhibits and hands-on programs in a fun learning environment. Families with kids can explore our exhibit gallery together during open hours for an admission fee, however, visits are always free for members. While you’re there, stop by the Marine Life Center to learn about our sea creatures and coral, and, practice your weather forecasting skills in front of our green screen.
Our makerspace, The Rivet, helps teens and adults build the skills to make or fix just about anything. Take a class on pottery, laser cutting, woodworking and more. Already have the skills, just need a place to work or a specific tool? Use ours! The Rivet was designed to support artists, hobbyists, entrepreneurs, and makers with their endeavors, in a collaborative workspace.
Continually seeking to spark curiosity and creativity, we serve everyone from toddlers to seniors. Discovery Space of Central Pennsylvania is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Have a children’s birthday party, visit our exhibit floor or marine life center, register for a day camp or summer camp, book a field trip, private group visit, or facility rental with us today at DiscoverySpace.org!
The Rivet, the adult education branch of Discovery Space, is a makerspace that supports and creates opportunities for entrepreneurs, artists, and makers. Filling 5,000 square feet of high bay garage space in the back of the science center’s building, The Rivet opened in February 2020 and has been tailoring its offerings to the community ever since.
There are several ways to engage with The Rivet. Take a class to learn how to use equipment such as a laser cutter, 3D printer, miter saw, drill press, lathe, pottery wheel or embroidery machine. Once you’ve learned how to safely use the equipment, you can come back during open workshop hours and use it for your own projects. No need to purchase expensive equipment anymore for single home improvement or artistic projects! Or register with a friend for a project-based class where you can make your own laser cut map, rubber stamp, planter, naturally imprinted plates, stackable rings, pewter cast coin, and more.
Already have a hobby or skill? Teach a class or use our equipment for your own projects during workshop hours. Our instructors and members represent some of the most creatively-minded people in community! Coming soon, check out our workforce development classes for teens and our do-it-yourself home improvement project classes.
Private classes and facility rentals are also available. See our full schedule of classes, book a private class, or reserve your space for workshop hours online at TheRivet.org. Email us for a free tour to see what we’re all about: TheRivet@DiscoverySpace.org.
