Diamond Lions set for Big Ten opener against Gophers

UNIVERSITY PARK — Penn State Athletics’ roaring success has continued into the spring, with the baseball team sporting a strong 9-3 record through the season’s first 12 games—the team’s best since 1980 (10-2). The Nittany Lions also won all their games in February for the first time in program history.

Penn State opens its Big Ten slate later this month, when Penn State hosts Minnesota for a three-game weekend series from March 22–24. Friday’s game is set for a 4 p.m. start, with Saturday and Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. and noon, respectively.

A few ticket options are currently available, including season packages, single-game tickets and group tickets for parties of 20 or more. Complete ticket information is available online.

Head Coach Rob Cooper’s squad has already notched some impressive victories this season, beating nationally-ranked Duke (No. 21) and taking two of three recently from Central Florida in Orlando. The Golden Knights entered the series against the Nittany Lions—who use the #DiamondLions hashtag on social media—with two victories over ranked opponents. Central Florida also narrowly missed out on last season’s NCAA Tournament.

So, there’s plenty of excitement surrounding the baseball team, which will play two dozen games at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park starting with the series against Minnesota. Other notable teams coming to Happy Valley this season are Pitt (April 10), Nebraska (April 12–14), West Virginia (April 17), Maryland (April 26–28), Rutgers (May 3–5) and Arizona (May 16–18).

If you catch a game, you might see a familiar name, as Penn State wide receiver Mac Hippenhammer also plays outfield for the baseball squad. The sophomore started four straight games for Penn State in early March.

In the early going, senior outfielder Jordan Bowersox has been powering the Nittany Lions at the plate. Through the 9-3 start, Bowersox led Penn State in batting (.378), runs (11), hits (17), hit by pitches (4) and on-base percentage.
