Super Saturday: PSU teams complete trifecta

UNIVERSITY PARK — It was a clean sweep for three Penn State teams on Saturday.

Penn State men’s basketball, men’s ice hockey and women’s volleyball all won their respective contests.

The men’s basketball team started the afternoon with a 74-54 win over George Washington at the Bryce Jordan Center. Five Nittany Lions reached double figures in the win as the Nittany Lions improved to 8-3 on the season.

PSU women's volleyball squad advances to Elite Eight

UNIVERSITY PARK – The Penn State women’s volleyball team advanced to the Elite Eight with a sweep of Missouri Friday afternoon in Rec Hall.

The top-seeded Nittany Lions took care of business against the Tigers, winning 25-17, 25-18 and 25-19. Simone Lee led the way with a match-high 15 kills.

Penn State improved to 32-1 with the win. The Nittany Lions will face the winner of this afternoon’s Illinois-Michigan State match.

The winner of Saturday’s Elite Eight match will move on to the Final Four in Kansas City.

It's a busy couple of days for Penn State sports

UNIVERSITY PARK – It’s a big sports weekend in Happy Valley.

It all starts this afternoon, when the Penn State women’s volleyball team takes on Missouri at 2 p.m. at Rec Hall in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. If you can’t make it to Rec Hall, check out the match on ESPNU.

Penn State volleyball is top seed as tourney begins

UNIVERSITY PARK – For the 28th consecutive season, the Penn State women’s volleyball team (29-1) will serve as one of the 16 sites for the first and second rounds of the NCAA tournament, this time as the No. 1 overall seed in the 2017 NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.

The NCAA tournament will start in University Park on Dec. 1 on with a 5 p.m. match at Pittsburgh (25-6) and VCU (30-2) and the second match of the night at 7:30 p.m. will feature the host Nittany Lions and Howard (16-15).

Well-rounded PSU athletes honored at STATE of Excellence Week

UNIVERSITY PARK – It's more than just winning on the field, and these athletes get it. Over 800 student athletes will be recognized for their achievements during the second annual STATE of Excellence Week, set for Oct. 16-22.

The Nittany Lions will celebrate four aspects of student-athlete success and experience – cultural, social, academic and athletic – with a different facet highlighted each day from Oct. 17-20.

The week culminates, fittingly, with team and individual champions being recognized at the Michigan football game at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 at Beaver Stadium.

Another busy sports weekend in Happy Valley

It’s going to be a busy sports weekend in Happy Valley.

There are a plethora of events taking place, including Saturday night’s football game against Georgia State at Beaver Stadium. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised by the Big Ten Network.

If you’re coming into town for the night game and looking for something to do, there are plenty of options.

Penn State Tied for National Lead in NCAA Championships Won Since 2007

Penn State’s lengthy National Championship history dates to 1921, including another crown this year, which has helped keep the Nittany Lions at the forefront nationally in NCAA title success.

Starting with the men’s and women’s fencing team winning its 10th national crown in March 2007, Penn State’s 19 NCAA Championships over the past 10 years are tied for the national lead with Oregon, Southern California and Stanford. The next closest school, Florida, has 16 titles during the 10-year span. The totals include football national championships.
