PSU point guard uses Nike Skills Academy to prep for upcoming season

UNIVERSITY PARK – Big Ten All-Freshman team select Tony Carr will look to build on a record-breaking first year at Penn State.

Carr, the team’s starting point guard, was the Nittany Lions’ leader in points (13.2) and assists (4.2) over the course of his 2016-17 freshman campaign.

His accolades during his freshman season earned him a trip to the 2017 Nike Skills Academy in Los Angeles this past summer.

The Nike Skills Academy consists of the top 20 collegiate basketball players from America.

The week-long academy allowed the top college basketball players in the nation to compete and work alongside one another.

The college standouts were also able to learn from some of the experts of the game of basketball.

NBA stand outs such as Gary Payton and John Lucas III were both present.

“It was a great on a day-to-day basis just competing, learning little tips here and there from those guys,” Carr said.

Carr learned the importance of being vocal as a point guard and leader.

“As a point guard everyone is going to look for my guidance, I learned to make my voice more heard as a leader,” Carr said.

Penn State returns a talented backcourt.

One that includes freshman Jamari Wheeler, the three-star recruit from Oak, Fla.

Carr and the Nittany Lions will host Campbell University at the Bryce Jordan Center on Friday, Nov. 10.
