Penn State Predictions: Lions come down the stretch

UNIVERSITY PARK – Down the stretch they come.

The Penn State football team will play its final home game of the season on Saturday when Nebraska visits Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions need a win to keep their New Year’s Day Bowl hopes alive.

Needless to say, it’s a must win.

The Lions are facing a struggling Nebraska team that is hovering around the .500 mark.

This will be the last home game for 23 seniors and most likely, Saquon Barkley.

Will the Lions get the crucial W? Let’s see what our staff had to say:

Matt Lingerman, sports intern (Season record 9-1): To put it simply, Nebraska is not a good football team this year. The Cornhuskers sit third in the lowly Big Ten West and have had some really poor results this season – namely a Week 3 loss to Northern Illinois. In Saturday's home finale and Senior Day, expect the Nittany Lions to come out firing early. Also, after a few mediocre weeks running the football which led to his Heisman hunt all but ending, look for Saquon Barkley to impress in his Beaver Stadium swan song.

Penn State 48, Nebraska 10.

Chris Morelli, managing editor (season record 9-1): Penn State got back on track last week with an impressive win over Rutgers at Beaver Stadium. The beat goes on this week. Nebraska is a lot like Rutgers – lousy. It will be cold and dreary for Senior Day, but that should deter fans from getting into their seats early. Barkley will have a big day in his final home appearance. I predict a rushing TD, a receiving TD and for good measure, a return TD. The score will be a familiar one.

Penn State 40, Nebraska 7.

John Patishnock, beat writer (season record 9-1): The Nittany Lions continue to boast a disruptive defense. Penn State has forced at least one turnover in its past 11 games, and Nebraska has a negative turnover ratio for the season (-5). Nebraska has to play essentially perfect football to stay in the game, and chances are that won’t happen against the Lions’ defense.

Penn State 45, Nebraska 20.

Michael Kresovich, sports intern (season record 8-2): Most likely, it will be Barkley’s final game in the stadium he has lit up since he broke out against in Rutgers back in 2015. Penn State was victorious last week against Rutgers after dropping two in a row. This week, a four-win Nebraska comes to Happy Valley. Penn State is ranked No. 10 in the College Football Playoff rankings, and will need many teams ahead of them to lose plus some serious resume building the rest of the season. Look for the offensive line to really open running lanes for Barkely so he can entertain the PSU fans one last time at Beaver Stadium. Penn State will roll through the Cornhuskers.

Penn State 52 Nebraska 7.

Abbi Sales, sports intern (season record 8-2): The last home game of the season is looking like a blowout. Nebraska is currently 4-6 and has a hard time running the ball, making it an easy win for Penn State. Although it is Senior Day, Barkley – currently a junior – could be playing his last game at Beaver Stadium. Lions in a rout.

Penn State 48, Nebraska 14.
