'Generations of Greatness' game highlights busy weekend

It’s going to be a big weekend in Happy Valley.

After a thrilling 21-19 win in Iowa City, the No. 4 Nittany Lions return home on Saturday afternoon for a 3:30 p.m. kick with Indiana at Beaver Stadium. The Lions will be wearing special throwback uniforms in the contest, but more about that later. There’s a lot to do in Happy Valley this weekend. Let’s take a closer look at what’s coming up this weekend. Here’s your day-by-day guide to the weekend in Happy Valley.

Friday, Sept. 29

Oktoberfest – Traveling to Munich is probably out of the question, so Tussey Mountain brings its own version of Oktoberfest to Centre County. There will be authentic food, beer and music. The music begins at 6 p.m. with the Bavarian Stompers. Smitty’s Polka Band follows at 8 p.m. Gates open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Penn State women’s volleyball vs. Illinois – Need a warm-up for Saturday’s football game? Check out the nationally-ranked Nittany Lions as they face the Fighting Illini at Rec Hall beginning at 7:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 30

Penn State football vs. Indiana – The No. 4 ranked Penn State football team returns home to face Indiana at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions will be wearing special throwback uniforms. Look for striped blue socks and numbers on the helmets. Even the argyle-styled end zones will make a comeback for the “Generations of Greatness” game. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.

Penn State women’s volleyball vs. Northwestern – As soon as the Nittany Lions are done taking care of the Hoosiers on the gridiron, head over to Rec Hall to watch the women’s volleyball squad take on Big Ten foe Northwestern beginning at 7 p.m.

Sunday, Oct. 1

Penn State men’s soccer vs. Michigan – The Nittany Lions face Big Ten rival Michigan at 1 p.m. at Jeffrey Field. The Nittany Lions have played some exciting games at home so far this young season. This promises to be another one.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Ottawa – The Penn State men’s hockey team opens its season on Sunday with a 3 p.m. exhibition tilt against Ottawa. No, not the Senators, the collegiate hockey team. If you’ve never seen the Nittany Lion hockey team in action, this is a good chance. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Penn State Chamber Orchestra – Performing as part of the fellowship’s music series, the ensemble’s program features guest artist mezzo-soprano Timmi Williams in a performance of “Folk Songs” by 20th century Italian composer Luciano Berio, as well as compositions by Igor Stravinsky and Richard Wagner. The concert begins at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship Church, 780 Waupelani Drive in State College. Tickets are $15 and just $5 for students with valid ID. Those 17 and younger are free.
