PSU hockey announces 2017-18 captains
UNIVERSITY PARK — Last year, James Robinson donned the 'A' for the Penn State hockey program but this year he will be wearing the 'C' as he was selected as captain of the team for the 2017-2018 season.
The program announced senior forward Robinson as captain along with the alternate captains, junior forward Chase Burger and senior defenseman Erik Autio, on the program's Snapchat account Tuesday afternoon.
Robinson suffered a season-ending injury on October 11, 2015, during the season opener against Canisius. He was awarded Academic All-Big Ten and was elected as an alternate captain for the 2016-2017 season by his teammates. Last season he played in 26 games, scoring three goals and one assist for four points.
Robinson told gopsusports.com that he "just feel[s] incredibly humbled,” and that “You look around the room and we have an outstanding number of guys who could be wearing letters this year. It’s an honor and a privilege to be a captain for Penn State.”
Burger played in all 39 games last season, scoring 13 goals and racking up 36 total points with 23 assists. He scored the game-winning goal in the NCAA tournament against Union along with two other goals that game. Burger led the Nittany Lions with a .578 faceoff percentage last season and was ranked plus-16.
Autio also skated in all 39 games last season, scoring three goals and 15 assists for a total of 18 points. He scored the game winning goal in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal against Minnesota in double-overtime. He also had a single-season Penn State record for a plus-33 ranking, leading the entire nation.
The Nittany Lions will return to Pegula Ice Arena on Sunday, October 1 to take on University of Ottawa in an exhibition game.
