Weekend events: Winter sports take over

STATE COLLEGE – The deep freeze is over – at least for now.

After a weekend of single-digit temperatures, this weekend figures to be a little better with temperatures in the 30s on Saturday and 20s on Sunday.

With that in mind, there’s an awful lot going on in and around Happy Valley this weekend. Let’s take a look at some of the highlights:

Penn State men’s basketball vs. Nebraska – Following a Tuesday trip to Bloomington, Ind., the Nittany Lions return home for another Big Ten contest with Nebraska. Tip off at the Bryce Jordan Center is set for 7 p.m. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Ohio State – Let’s face it: No one likes Ohio State. The Penn State men’s hockey team will get a crack at the Buckeyes on Friday night. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. at Pegula Ice Arena. For tickets, visit www.ticketmaster.com.

“The Opera House” – “The Opera House” is a new film by multiple Emmy Award–winning documentary filmmaker Susan Froemke. It surveys a remarkable period of the Metropolitan Opera’s rich history and a time of great change for New York. Drawing on rarely seen archival footage, stills, and recent interviews, the film chronicles the creation of the Met’s storied home of the last 50 years, against the backdrop of the artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New York City in the ’50s and ’60s. “The Opera House” will be shown at 12:55 p.m. on the big screen at the State Theatre. Penn State women’s gymnastics vs. Nebraska – The Penn State women’s gymnastics team is back at Rec Hall for a 4 p.m. meet with Nebraska. Tickets are available at Rec Hall.

Penn State men’s volleyball vs. Alderson-Broaddus – Following the gymnastics meet, Rec Hall transforms for men’s volleyball and a 7 p.m. tilt with Alderson-Broaddus. Tickets are available at Rec Hall.

Penn State men’s hockey vs. Ohio State – Another critical matchup against the Buckeyes at Pegula Ice Arena. Face off takes place at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at www.ticketmaster.com.

Lady Grey’s Pinups and Patriots – Lady Grey’s Lovlies will help you flash back to an era when the Andrew Sisters, Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe and the stars of the 1940s entertained the troops with standards that you know and love. The Lovlies will perform high-energy tap, swing dance, burlesque and USO-style entertainment as well as an exciting new cast of local and regional guest artists. Performances will be at 8 and 10 p.m. in the Attic at the State Theatre. For tickets, visit www.thestatetheatre.org.
